Ridiculous

The state of Minnesota needs to back off Daniel Hauser. This 13 year old has said that he doesn't want to have chemotherapy for the Hodgkin's lymphoma he is battling. His parents would like to pursue a different course of treatment for the young man. Daniel had a round of chemo; he didn't like the experience, (who would?), felt his body was being poisoned in the process, and guess what? The tumor in his chest, (for which he received the chemo), is back.

I would feel differently if Daniel's parents were rejecting all medical treatments for him, but this is clearly not the case. Labeling Daniel's mother a criminal and issuing a warrant for her arrest is unconscionable. His parents were willing to try traditional treatment, something that was, perhaps, outside their comfort zone, in an effort to do what they can for their child.

Contradictory as it may sound for me to say, I would be on the state's side if the parents were eschewing all medical intervention, despite their son's request to try non-traditional treatments.

Have you heard some of the side effects mentioned in pharmaceutical commercials? Those alone scare the shit out of me, and I am, for the most part, healthy. My Aunt participated in an experimental chemo program at NIH. The chemo they used had a chemical makeup akin to jet fuel. JET. FUEL. It paralyzed her before it killed her.

No wonder Daniel has decided to say no mas. I don't blame him. The law may say otherwise, but this young man is old enough at 13 to have his voice heard and his wishes respected.
