What You Don't Know Won't Hurt You 2/2

Mar 12, 2008 17:54

Okay. Last part. There'll be some singing and dancing involved. Yup.

Miranda Priestly was lying on her bed, annoyed with the events of the day. Surely, she can ask that much from Andrea, can’t she? A greeting, a kiss, or something that would at least tell her that she didn’t forget the date. It was her birthday. Everybody remembered that it was her birthday, can’t Andrea be counted on to do the same? She can forget that everybody else remembered, but not if Andrea forgot. And there had to be a good explanation for why she forgot about it and why she now even dared to work a late shift. The world can be so unfair.

Andy whispered to the band, “Okay, in 5, 4, 3, 2… and now.”

The band started playing. Miranda groaned. It had to be Cassidy. Cassidy and her penchant for show music. Oh goodness. Not now. Not while she was in the mood to sulk.

Seriously, was the world trying to piss her off?

“Cassidy, can you turn that thing off?” Miranda called out.

“Mom, that wasn’t me.” Cassidy called out from the stairs.

While in the midst of the diversion, Andy and the band snuck into the room, playing the melody for ‘For Once in My Life’ louder. When Miranda walked back to the room, she was surprised to see Andrea there, with a bunch of flowers and a few gifts.

The three children were listening downstairs. “Okay, Andy’s inside. Let’s go up, right now.” Caroline said, as they ran over to the guest room near their mother’s bedroom.

Meanwhile, at the bedroom, Miranda was gaping at Andrea. “Andrea,” She managed to breath out, but not before the band started to play the music.

“For once in my life I have someone who needs me
Someone I've needed so long
For once unafraid I can go where life leads me
And somehow I know I'll be strong

For once I can touch

What my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew

Someone warm like you

Could make my dreams come true

Miranda was looking at Andy appreciatively. Andy managed to smile a little before continuing with the song. Andy mouthed a quick “Happy birthday,” before the melody started again. Andrew and the girls were lurking somewhere in the room.

For once in my life
I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once I've got someone
I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore

For once I can say “This is mine, you can't take it”
As long as I've got love
I know I can make it
For once in my life
I've got someone who needs me”

Andy ended the song and handed the flowers and the presents to Miranda, who laid them all on the bed. Miranda then embraced Andrea. As if on cue, the children burst into the room, Caroline covering the whole thing on her camcorder.

“Hi, Mom!” The three of them waved. Andrew opened the cake’s box as they walked towards the couple, who was now slow dancing to “Unforgettable”. “Happy birthday!”

Andy and Miranda parted as Miranda blew the candles on the cake. The band now changed it’s melody to “Happy Birthday” as Andy and the children sang the song for her and wrapped her in a big family hug. Miranda beamed at all four of them.

“Oh, this is marvelous.” Miranda said, looking at Andrea. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Andy said, giving her a kiss to her cheek.

“What did you wish for, Mom?” Andrew asked, still holding the cake.

“It’s a secret.” Miranda said, smiling.

“Good enough for me.” Cassidy said, grinning widely.

“We’ll tell you how we did it later.” Caroline promised.

“Please do.” Miranda replied, embracing her children. Times like these were when she was very thankful that she had children. They were downright adorable, not to mention smart enough and nice enough to surprise her on her birthday.

Andy broke off from Miranda while the band was playing a few tunes.

“Okay,” Andy said, imitating a singer performing live, “I’d like to thank Mike, Jimmy, Hector, Steve, Eddie, and Tony for playing for us tonight,” She said, gesturing to the band, “And before they go, I’d like to sing a little something for my sweetheart.” Andy added, as Miranda beamed at her and Caroline had the camcorder on her. “This one’s a little song from Cole Porter, entitled ‘Let’s Misbehave’.” Miranda glowed even more when she heard the title of the song. She was positively blushing now. “Miranda, baby, this is for you.” Andy said, a finger pointing at Miranda. The band played the song as Andy started singing and dancing in front of Miranda.

“You could have a great career, and you should, yes you should.

Only one thing stops you dear, you're too good, way too good!

If you want a future, darlin',

Why don't you get a past?

'Cause that fateful moment's comin' at last...”

Miranda chuckled at Andrea’s display of theatrics, but not before Andy slid her arm into her waist and started dancing with her around the room, still singing the song. Caroline and Cassidy shrieked in surprise while Andrew clapped and whistled loudly.

We're all alone, no chaperone

Can get our number

The world's in slumber--let's misbehave!

There's something wild about you child

That's so contagious

Let's be outrageous--let's misbehave!

Miranda laughed when Andrea started to dance the tango, and then held her close as they did their own version of the jive. It was a wonderful moment. She hoped that it could last forever. It was, out of all the birthdays that she could ever have, the best one.

When Adam won Eve's hand

He wouldn't stand for teasin'.

He didn't care about those apples out of season.

They say that Spring means just one thing to little lovebirds

We're not above birds--let's misbehave!

“You want to hear the rest of the song?” Andy said, as they danced around the room.

“I’d love to,” Miranda said, keeping up with Andy. “Andrea, this really is--”

It's getting late and while I wait

My poor heart aches on

Why keep the breaks on? Let's misbehave!

Andy spun Miranda around and then caught her in time. The children immediately clapped. Cassidy nudged Caroline as Andy heard her ask, “Did you get that on tape?” “Yes?”

“Wonderful.” Miranda continued.

“Thank you.” Andy said. “I was worried you’d think I didn’t sing well.”

“You’re pitch-perfect, mon amour.” Miranda cooed, her cheek against Andy’s.

I feel quite sure affaire d'amour
Would be attractive
While we're still active, let's misbehave!

“Why don’t we take the song’s suggestion?” Andy offered, now dancing close to the band before leading Miranda away and nearer to the camera, wiggling her eyebrows as they went. “While we’re still active,” Andy sang again, and then dropped to a whisper she knew only Miranda can hear, “Let’s misbehave.” Andy grinned at her widely.

You know my heart is true

And you say you for me care...

Somebody's sure to tell,

But what the heck do we care?

They say that bears have love affairs and even camels

We're men and mammals--let's misbehave!”

“Hmmm, not a bad suggestion,” Miranda said, as Andy spun her one last time before the song ended. “When the kids get to bed.”

“I’d like that.” Andy said. “I’d really, really like that.”

The band walked out, but it didn’t matter. Andy and Miranda started slow dancing again, and this time, the kids were walking out of the room, step by step, cake still in Andrew’s hands as Caroline was videotaping the moment. It was the perfect way to cap a great evening.

“That’s really perfect, isn’t it?” Cassidy said. “True love.”

“I’ll say.” Andrew said, raising the box like a glass of champagne, as they stood on the doorframe separating them from the inner bedroom. “Happy birthday, Mom.”

“Yeah,” Caroline agreed from behind the camera. “Happy birthday, Mom.” Then she turned to her brother and sister. “Okay, let’s get out of here.”

When they got out of the room, Caroline pointed the camera towards them. “This is Cassidy, Caroline and Andrew Priestly. Mission accomplished.” Then she pushed the stop button and the three of them walked downstairs to their bedrooms.

Andy was holding Miranda tightly as they continued slow dancing, ending up a mere half-step away from the bed. “Looks like the kids are gone. Have I told you how much I love you?” Miranda smiled slightly. “Guess I haven’t. I love you, Miranda.”

Miranda kissed her soundly. “You don’t know how much I love you, Andrea Sachs.”

A few minutes later, they were still slow dancing, Andrea humming “Happy Birthday”.

“I feel quite sure affaire d'amour would be attractive,” Miranda sang softly, as Andy grinned. Miranda then pushed both of them slightly to the bed, embracing Andy tightly, and rolling them both so she could land on top of her lover. Andy grinned slyly at the sudden shift in position. “While we're still active, let's misbehave!”
