I found out that while my extended health benefits through my husband's work only covers $20 per visit for massage, it covers up to $400 per year for acupuncture, so when I went into my baby appointment today I got a referral from my doctor (luckily I was seeing a doctor rather than a midwife today, because the insurance paperwork says "doctor" and I'd rather not have that ambiguity when it comes to dealing with insurance). I'm hoping this will help with the rib pain.

The doctor is a bit of a former child prodigy (she got her medical degree from McGill at 23) and so she's very young looking, and she always wears these big black boxy glasses, so although she's very knowledgable and has good bedside manners and everything, it's always a bit like going to see Dr. Hipster. Maybe it's wrong of me but somewhere in the back of my mind I feel like she's going to write me a prescription for PBR and Arcade Fire.

Baby Bean is head down and everything's going well there. She did an ultrasound to check the position and I explained to Pippa that it was like "Skyping with baby sister", which the doctor thought was hilarious. Pippa was super excited by this idea and wanted the ultrasound to go on forever.

After the appointment we went produce shopping. We went a little crazy at the Fruiticana and spent like $40, granted half of which was paneer and breads. But it's so nice to have a fully stocked fridge of fruit and veg. I feel healthier already.

A while ago (like, over a month), I ran our list of baby names by Pippa, to see how she pronounced them (hoping to head off at the pass any embarrassing pronunciations that could become embarrassing lasting nicknames for poor Beanie). Suddenly, within the last week, Pippa's started referring to the baby by "Alice" or "Mary Alice", which was one of the names at the top of our list. (It's my paternal grandmother's full name, and both sides of the family have people by both names.) The first time she did this, she was telling me the names of various things (stuffed animals, herself, etc) and I asked her baby sister's name and she said, after thinking a moment, "Alice."

Since then she's spontaneously referred to the baby by this name a few times. When I was putting her down for her nap, she said "Mary Alice in there" regarding my belly.

It's not 100% going to be her name (we still don't clinch it until we meet the baby) but I think it's definitely made it more likely that we choose it, if only because now I'm starting to think of the baby as Mary Alice.

I've hit my sitting down limit now but it was great to be able to actually type a blog entry! Sure hope I can get an acupuncture appointment soon and that it will help with this. It's a feeling alternating between being slowly squeezed in a vice around my ribs, and whatever the opposite of that would be, and it radiates down the back and up to the shoulders. It's really annoying and hard to relax, and it makes me snappish.
