Oh man, Anthony was terrified of public toilets! The self-flushers were the worst. I feared his being scarred for life. An angel taught us that if you cover the "eye" with toilet paper, it won't flush until you remove it, and that part of the problem was solved. We tried a travel potty seat, but that didn't work too well. It was too flimsy to really make him feel secure. What eventually worked was Mama would always go first (his idea). Then I had to be mean and hold him onto the potty and hug him and tell him it was ok until he just couldn't hold it any longer or relaxed enough to go on his own. He cried, but it wasn't temper tantrum crying, he would just cry and cling to me because he was so scared. If he started to fight we were done. We practiced every day at church or at our public library at the time it's only open for toddlers. It had to be out of the house, since he wasn't scared at home. It took about a month. Good luck!
