I'm on my way out, and won't be around much this weekend, so this is a rather short Checkmate review.
It wasn't a bad episode. But it didn't really feel like Smallville either.

Not enough Clark.
What was up with Clark dangling Tess off the side of a building?!
What was up with scared Tess
in tears, confessing to Ollie how Clark made her tell him where Checkmate headquarters are?
Seriously, writers? Seriously?!
And what is up with badass Tess being all scared in that last scene with Ollie?
The only way this whole mess would work for me is if Tess and Clark made a deal to keep Ollie in the dark for some reason, and Tess was putting up a show with tears and acting scared.
Why is Chloe so pissy and condescending to Clark all the time?
Why is Clark once again apologizing to people who betrayed him and manipulated him, while they are not owning up to their part?!
Speaking of assholes, what is up with Ollie? Could he be any more obnoxious?
Some hero, refusing to help someone who's asking for help and telling him there's a good chance she might end up murdered.
And the talk about how Tess betrayed him? Pot, kettle, black, Ollie. Your ass should be grateful Clark is even still talking to you, you backstabbing, kryptonite weapons stockpiling bastard! You could learn something from him!
Ollie and Chloe. They're
overdoing it, big time. That last scene was cringeworthy.

Clark's save was badass. Very interestingly filmed.
Though they overdid it when they used slow motion at the start of the episode too. Someone is playing with new ideas or toys. Please, stop. This is so not SV style, and you're overdoing it. Save it for special occasions.
Ollie and Tess were brilliant.
I loved how they figured out their identities. Very Batman II.
I also loved the scene in the bedroom. Throw a bigger knife at him next time, Tess. Asshole deserves it.
Martian Manhunter is a badass!
I especially loved how he bluffed his way out of that ring of fire.
And I loved his talk with Clark. Damn right Clark shouldn't pick a side. At the moment, that scene is the only thing giving me hope that the writers might not crap all over Clark once again in the finale.
The Wall is badass. I like her, she's so determined.
Intrigue isn't bad. Who is the Red Queen?
With Tess being in on the secret now, not only with Clark, but with Ollie as well, I fear for her. She's an amazing character, and Cassidy is a fantastic actress. I think Tess brings more to the show than both Chloe and Ollie combined. So if someone has to go this year, I'd rather see Chloe and Ollie go, and I'll even throw Zod in to sweeten the deal. Just, lets keep Tess, mmmk?
