Summary: Nick and Cate reluctantly supervise an exhumation.
The trek through the cemeteries snow covered lawns might have seemed a nuisance to some people, but Nick Harper was used to it. He had worn his boots for the occasion, and so did his colleague, Cate Elliot, along with the two men with the grave digger equipment, and the man with the ground de-thawer. The deceased's family members, however, were wearing shoes that would better belong in church.
Cate leaned closer to Nick. "Does the family know how much it costs to exhume a body in the middle of a Minnesota winter?" she whispered.
Nick shrugged. "I'm not sure they're under the impression that they're the ones paying for it. Do you see the cops here? It's obviously not an official investigation. Though I think they'd like to think it was."
The family was standing several yards away in a gloomy silence, as Nick imagined anyone would be if they were in the process of digging up their loved one's remains.
"What is this about anyway?" Cate asked, taking another step closer to Nick. "The email I got said they were exhuming him, but didn't say why."
"See the family?" Nick looked over at them. "They think the wife poisoned the guy. I guess they need to get samples to prove it. It'll be expensive all around since the police ruled it as a death by natural causes."
"Ugh, this is such a pain!" Cate hugged herself in the cold. "I'm freezing out here and this is all probably for nothing. I hope the guy isn't completely decomposed. Not only will there be nothing left to test, but it won't be a pretty sight for the family, either."
Nick suppressed a laugh. "I think they should be standing back at the road. He's been in the ground for at least two years."
