Summary: The Taylor siblings say goodbye.
Kyle rushed into the church behind Justin and then tapped him on the shoulder. "Do I look okay to you?"
Justin turned to look at him briefly. "It's a nice suit," he said.
Kyle dropped it once they were inside. The small town church was nothing like his mom's church at home. It was big and airy and looked like it was built in the last ten years. And with all the people Kyle didn't recognize, he felt very out of place.
Justin had spotted their mother and began to make his way over, so Kyle followed him. Unfortunately, it brought them very close to the open casket, and he did everything he could to prevent himself from looking in that direction.
"I didn't know if you would come," Justin was saying.
"I thought I should be here for you kids," Mrs Taylor replied.
Kyle looked at her face briefly, and then stared at some flowers that were behind her shoulder.
"Why don't you and Kyle pay your last respects?" She looked up at the clock on the wall. "They'll be starting the mass in about fifteen minutes."
Justin took a few steps away, but Kyle didn't want to follow. He then felt Justin's hand tugging on his sleeve.
"Are you coming?"
Several thoughts raced through his mind. He thought about the wake the previous night and how he had stayed at the front of the room and as far away from the casket as he could. Then he wondered if he would regret not looking. Something inside him made the decision for him.
"No, I'll just wait for you over here," he said, looking Justin right in the eye for just a moment. "You go."
Justin nodded and stepped away. When Kyle looked back for his mother, she was off talking to some other people that he didn't recognize. In a state of unease, he walked over to an empty table that was set up for the luncheon afterwards, and sat down to wait for Justin.
It was only a few minutes later when Justin took the seat beside him and put a hand on his shoulder. "I know this is hard for you," he said. "But you'll get through it."
Kyle shrugged. "He wasn't really my dad, anyway. Not really." Kyle looked up at Justin and tried to smile. "Only on paper, right?"
For a moment, Justin didn't say anything. "I guess you're right."
It was then that both Nicki and Phil plopped down across from them at the table. Phil looked incredibly irritated and Nicki; exhausted.
"I was wondering when you two would show up," Justin said.
Phil crooked his thumb toward Nicki. "You can blame her faulty GPS. That's the last time I trust modern technology!"
Kyle grinned and imagined the two of them bickering while they drove all the way from the Twin Cities to Brainerd. "Well," he said, "At least you made it."
