"This grass is too tall! What if there are ticks?"
Paul looked back at Becca with a frown. "Oh, be quiet. You act like you didn't grow up in Minnesota. Carly isn't complaining."
Beside Becca, Carly hitched up her bag and smiled at her friend. "You should have worn pants. Where did you think they were taking us? Applebees? Do you know Paul at all?"
Becca stuck out her lower lip and then stepped over a wide log in the trail. "One can hope..."
"Hurry up, girls," Arthur said from ahead of Paul. "We're almost there."
It was a gorgeous spring day in St Peter, and Carly and Arthur had come back to spend some time with their friends. It wasn't surprising when Paul had announced a little adventure for them to go on, and had showed up at Arthur's parents' house with a picnic lunch. Then they had picked up Becca at the dorms and were on their way.
The Minnesota sunshine was a little more forgiving than what she was used to in California, and when the trail opened out onto the river, she didn't pull out her shades.
"This is it!" Paul said and set his backpack down on a shabby looking picnic table in front of a stream. "Arthur and I used to come here a lot as kids. You two can now consider yourself part of the in-crowd." He winked at both Carly and Becca.
Becca slapped a bug away from her bare arm. "I'm not sure I want to be a part of this crowd."
Paul began to pull containers of food out of his bag. "You'll change your mind when you see what I've brought. It's your favorite."
Becca went to help him with the food. "Oh? And who says you know what my favorite is?"
Carly looked up at Arthur who was standing on the other side of the table and then went over to him so she could take his hand. "I like seeing a little more into your world," she said, smiling up at him. "It's nice here."
"Better than other places in St Peter." He leaned down and pressed a light kiss to her lips. "I'm glad I got to show it to you."
