- Kyle, Justin, Nicki, & Phil are from my old series, "Paying the Consequences"
-Hmm ages... Let's say Kyle is 20 and Justin is 28.
Smirking, she turned and walked away.
Kyle sat at the bar and watched her push through the doors. It wasn't until she was gone that he realized she was his ride home, and he was majorly screwed. He put his face in his hand and groaned.
This kind of shit only happened to him. He only went out with the kind of girls that would ditch him at bars. If only he hadn't crashed his car last month... or maybe if Nicki would have let him borrow her car, he wouldn't be stuck at some horrible Minneapolis bar surrounded by college kids who looked about twice as trashed as he was well on his way to being.
That girl... what was her name again? Brandi, Bobbi... whatever! She had known he didn't have a ride! He was sure of it!
Kyle sat up on his bar stool with resolution and pulled out his cell from his pocket. He would just call Nicki, and Nicki would come and pick him up... and that would be the end of it. There was no reason to panic!
But his thumb hovered over his touch pad and wouldn't move.
No... he couldn't call Nicki. Not when he had had one too many drinks.
Justin! He would call Justin.
He quickly pulled up Justin's phone number from his call log and put his phone to his ear. After three long rings, he heard the line pick up.
"Kyle... what the hell...? It's one AM!" Justin's voice sounded groggy.
"Not quite," Kyle said. "I'm sorry, Justin... but I need a huge favor. I'll owe you big time."
Justin didn't say anything for several seconds. "Where are you?"
"I'm on the corner of Hennepin and eleventh... some bar called the Bullfrog. Would you mind horribly coming and getting me?" he asked in his best little brother voice. "You don't even have to drive me back to St Paul... I can sleep on your couch or something. I won't make a peep!"
"Kyle..." Justin groaned.
"You have to get me." Kyle leaned onto to the bar and narrowly missed knocking over his beer. "I just can't call Nicki and make her drive over here in the middle of the night. Justin... I can't!"
"Okay... I'll come," Justin said.
Kyle let his breath out. "Thank you so much. Like I said, I owe you big time. Anything you want me to do... I'll do it! Just name it!"
"I think about that when I'm fully awake," Justin muttered. "Give me a few minutes to get dressed and then I'll be out there... shouldn't take too long."
They went over the address again, and Kyle hung up the phone, feeling a load off his shoulders. Abandoned, yes... destitute, he was not. He could always count on his family when he was in a tight spot. He knew that Nicki would have came to get him, too, but he would have felt incredibly guilty making her drive all the way over to Minneapolis when she didn't drive around downtown all that often. That, and he didn't want her to see him with several drinks in him. He hadn't exactly told her where he was going before he had left the house...
After he paid his tab, he walked outside to wait for Justin and watched the rifraf that walked past him on the street. When Justin's car pulled up, he quickly pulled open the door and slid inside.
"Thank you so much, Justin... you have no idea how much of a lifesaver you are."
Justin looked over at him from the drivers' seat. "I might have a small idea," he said.
"Either way." Kyle closed the door and fastened his seatbelt before the car took off down the street. "You're the best brother I ever had."
This made Justin smile, as Kyle knew it would. "Pretty easy," Justin said. "When my only competition is Phil. But let's not pick on Phil!" he quickly added. "Who knows... he might have crawled out of bed to pick you up, too, if you had said it nicely enough."
"I think I would have called Nicki first..." Kyle muttered.
"Maybe you'd call Phil before Mom."
Kyle looked over at him with wide eyes. "Definitely before Mom! I can't believe you'd even suggest I'd call her at all! I think I'd have to be almost dead before I did!"
Justin chuckled and flipped on his blinker to turn onto the street that led to his apartment complex. They pulled into the underground parking and exited the car before Justin locked the doors and they started to make their way to the elevators.
"So," Justin said, glancing over at Kyle. "Exactly how many drinks did you have? Do I need to warn Adelyn that you'll be having a rough morning?"
"No." Kyle waved him aside. "Nothing like that. I had maybe four beers. No big deal."
Justin had just stepped onto the elevator and glanced over at him before he pressed the button to take them up to his floor. "Hmm."
"You always overreact," Kyle said.
"I didn't say anything."
Kyle narrowed his eyes at him. "Yes, you did. You said, 'Hmm.' That's something! It certainly implies something."
"Oh?" Justin raised an eyebrow at him. "What does it imply?"
The elevator opened at Justin's floor, so Kyle stepped off and shot a look back at him. "That you disapprove of me," he said.
Justin followed behind him. "Hmm."
Kyle turned around and pointed at him. "There! You did it again!"
"Shh!" Justin held up his hands. "This isn't some frat house! People are sleeping!"
"Sorry," Kyle said and made an effort to lower his voice. "Never mind. I'll just drop it. I know how you feel on the subject anyway. But you can tell Adelyn not to worry. Though..." He watched while Justin found the correct key on his keyring and made a move to open the door to his apartment. "Do you think you can drive me home in the morning? I'll explain everything to Nicki, of course, but I just think it would be easier for you to drive me back than for her to come out and get me." He gave his brother his best smile.
Justin looked up at him with irritation and then sighed. "Yes, I can drive you back. Don't you worry your curly little head over it."
"I told you," Kyle whispered when Justin opened the door. "You're the best brother ever!"
