Summary: He refuses to do it and she falls for it.
The day had been long and exhausting. Most of it was spent mildly arguing against Reborn and really, she should know better than to try and get him to do anything he was against from the beginning... But still, she had wanted him to just do it once. If he had just said it, Luce would have dropped the matter altogether and left him alone, but no, the man was about as stubborn as she was sometimes. With a soft sigh, Luce excuses herself from the living room and heads for their bedroom and once reaching their room, she sets his pillow outside the doorway and shuts the door softly. He could sleep on the couch tonight until he came to his senses.
He watches her go, mumbling a good night after her waddling form and resumes reading. The outside depicting an autobiography of some nameless face, but the inside holding a smaller book on: What to Expect When You Are Expecting. She didn't need to know that he was doing his part on understanding pregnancies and even if he gave the vibe of arrogant nonchalance, Reborn was getting to be quite the baby expert. Still, she left in a huff and he stayed there reading by the fireplace, amused by her attitude.
Luce tossed and turned (about as much as her large belly would allow) in frustration. All she wanted was for him to talk to the baby. To say a few words so the unborn child could get accustomed to his voice as well as hers. The books all said it was a great bonding experience and here she was trying to get him to bond and he flat out refused! Alright, again too excited, with a few calming breaths, Luce tries to clear her mind and go to sleep. About thirty restless minutes later, she manages to go into a deep sleep. Or some form of sleep.
The door creaks open, Reborn at the threshold holding his pillow with a furrowed brow and light frown. Really, sometimes she was impossible. Reborn doesn't sleep on the couch. Ever and he wasn't about to start now. He changes into his own variation of pajamas and slips into bed beside her. Only, instead of closing his eyes, pulling her towards him and falling asleep; Reborn shifts to hover over her. His lips pressed to the thin fabric of her simple nightgown and his hand lightly rubbing small circles to her stomach. He speaks to the child, his words breaking the peaceful silence of the room and causing Luce to stir, but she doesn't wake and Reborn continues. He even coos, very unmanly of him, but he said what she wanted him to and the soft thumps against his lips gave him the signal that the child heard something. That or it was moving about restlessly and terribly cramped. According to the books, the available space was slowly disappearing as the child grew. See Luce, he does know a thing or two. Still, he stays positioned in such a matter- body pressed to her side, lips against the swollen middle and a hand lightly rubbing the other side of her stomach.
She doesn't move, forces her breathing and pulse to remain the same as she continues to feint sleep. This was such a surprise, Luce didn't want to ruin it by "waking" up. He muttered nonsense to the baby, his voice so much softer than she could ever imagine and he was directing it all towards her belly. Only, the moment that he began to coo and gush over her skin, caught her off guard and thus moved, but was able to pass it off as a sleeping movement. He did tense, stopping his one-sided conversation and waited for her to move again. When she didn't, he continued. Really this was so cute and out of character of him that Luce began to cry. Oh those hormones! They just gave her cover away.
"Did I wake you?" He asks her in a cool and collected voice.
"Sort of," she tells him while wiping at her eyes. He tenses and she grins.
"You were listening...?"
"... Maybe..."
"...."
A giggle is his response and he begins to back away from her stomach to flop on his side and pretend like he's tired enough to sleep already; along with ignoring the rest of the topic altogether.
She, however, is not tired anymore and most certainly not letting things end right there. "I thought you said it was pointless to talk to a thing that wouldn't be able to talk back?" She repeats some of those words he used against her and continues grinning in the darkness of the room.
"And I was right. I received nothing, therefore making my words insignificant." He tells her a bit defensively. He is met with another giggle and a pat to his back, which just has him turning around to face her. He doesn't say anything, merely staring at her with narrowed eyes and Luce, continues to grin; clearly unfazed by his intimidating look. He sighs, shutting his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose-- This is when she jumps on the opportunity.
"Do it again? Please?"
"..."
"I did say, 'please,'" Luce points out, her smile never faltering and only becoming brighter. He sighs again and she knows it's over. She. Has won~.
"I'll talk, you sleep." He agrees with his own deal and she nods, a bit to eagerly before biting her bottom lip under his stare and shifting to a more comfortable position.
Reborn does the same, and again places his lips firmly to the soft nightgown, murmuring meaningless things to the unborn babe and Luce content with the nights change of events; does fall asleep. The gentle cooing and utterly sweet phrases from Reborn her new lullaby.
