I left the house early this morning to meet a work friend for a bird watching walk at a park (Whittier Peninsula) along the Scioto River. My friend, an avid (crazy) birder, led me and about half a dozen other birder watchers on the walk. In spite of fog and cloudy skies we saw: a Baltimore oriole building its nest in hopes of catching a mate; cormorants drying their wings in a tree; yellow warblers; a tiny blue-grey gnatcatcher sitting atop its equally tiny nest that; at first glance, looked like a knot on the tree branch; and a black pole warbler, which is rare in Ohio.
It was lots of fun. I think I made a decent birder, for my first time. It was also pretty dumb from a back care aspect. After an hour-and-a-half my low back was starting to ache, and I'm pretty sure I threw my SI joint out. I left the others and walked back to my car to head for work. I don't regret the experience a bit, but it's a good thing I have an appointment with Dr. K tomorrow.
