Last weekend, Saturday I think it was, I was flipping through the TV channels and saw a little bit of the figure skating "competition" Ice Wars. I wasn't really in a very attentive mood, so I didn't watch much, but I did have the presence of mind to record a few of the programs. Actually, I taped them mostly because the commercial break intro and outro music was from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack, and I was sure someone was going to be skating to it. I am fairly predictable at times. :) Alas, I was wrong. It was just filler music.
However, I did happen to tape Jamie Salet and David Pelltier (sp?) skating to the Queen song "Who Wants to Live Forever", from the Highlander movie soundtrack. I love the haunting quality of that song. I watched the tape of their skating routine a couple of times last night, since Judging Amy wasn't on.
I can't get it out of my head. It was one of the best figure skating choreographies I've ever seen. I usually don't care too much for pairs figure skating, but this choreography was contemporary and interesting. They made good use of the musical cues and hit them right on almost every time. They made curves to angles and back to curves. Good use of white space, too; they didn't always skate close together. Power flowing through each lift, each arm extension, every line of their bodies. The movements seemed to fit the music almost entirely the whole way through. My description is poor, but you get the idea. It was amazing.
