Water pressure fixed

Aug 12, 2008 12:51

The problems we've had with our water system ever since the huge elecitrical storm in late June, are now, I believe, completely fixed. The water heater was fixed two weeks ago, but even after that we’ve had intermittant problems with the water pressure dropping down to nothing for a few minutes (or more), and then coming back to full pressure. It was especially bad if we were using a lot of water at once.

I called the local well driller and he was out this morning. He said the problem was a faulty capacitor in the control box for the pressure tank. He replaced the capacitor, and now everything works fine. I think it was damaged by a surge of electricity during the thunderstorm (some of those strikes were really close-maybe very, very close!). But it was 20 years old, and near the end of its life, anyway.

I feel lucky that the water pump itself wasn’t damaged. The driller said pumps usually run about $400-$500, and the labor to replace it would be around $300. He says he’s seen them last 30 years, but our pump is 20 years old; it’s good to know that expense could come along at any time.
