Very soon now, the old Lazarus garage, located on the corner of Front and Rich streets in downtown Columbus, will be no more. Demolition of the garage, which has been closed for years, has been underway all week, a section at a time. I've been watching the progress as I walk to my car each afternoon. The last piece still standing is currently being knocked down. People are standing on chairs along the wall facing the demolition site, peering out of our high windows. I expect to hear a loud cheer when it finally falls.
As I understand it, a new garage will be constructed in the same location to replace the old one. Then the parking lot just to the north, between Rich and Towne Streets, will be turned into condos. Hopefully the parking garage will provide parking both for the condo residents and downtown workers who currently park in the doomed lots.
