My knees love: glucosamine and elliptical!

Checking my LiveJournal archives, I see that I have been taking glucosamine and chondroiten for 5 weeks now. I want you to know that sitting down no longer produces twinges of pain in my knees. This morning I knelt down to pick something up off the floor with an easy, smooth, graceful movement, and no pain. Glucosamine works ( Read more... )

You may have a bone spur or some calcifications. I always assumed that I had just overdone it, but no, there was an actual problem causing the inflammation this time. Well, and I have some arthritis, too. Ice, heat, whatever works. The experts always say ice now.

I looked up bone spurs on Wikipedia, and while I’m genetically predisposed to osteoarthritis, I doubt that what I have in my shoulder is a bone spur, since I haven’t been experiencing arthritis symptoms there before (or anywhere, really, except maybe my knees). It says bone spurs can be caused by mechanical damage, but since I’ve been moving my arm since I fell a month ago, I am hopeful that’s not the issue. I think it’s more likely muscle damage from the fall. My muscles seem to take a long time to heal from shock. The pain is slight, and doesn’t interfere with normal movement. If it’s still there in a few weeks I’ll go to a doctor.

The experts always say ice now.

I was told in massage school to use ice for the first 48 hours after an injury, then to use moist heat alternating with ice (and ending with ice). But I’ll take your advice and see what using ice only does for me. It certainly can't hurt. Thanks!

Soft tissue damage does take a while to heal. I hope you have only that, too.

Well I'm glad that's normal and not just me. :-) I'm able to continue with gentle exercise, it's just jarring motions that occasional bring a twinge of pain. I'm trying to be careful with it. I should probably be more aggressive with applying ice, though (as in, keep it up).
