Christmas spirit? Not this year

Your Christmas Sprit Level: 20%

Your Christmas spirit is there, but it's very faint.

If you celebrate Christmas at all, it's only when you truly want to.

It's okay if you're not really into the whole Christmas thing. Don't worry about not having enough spirit.

Pushing yourself to do more will only turn you into a Grinch!

Do You Have the Christmas Spirit?

Yeah, that's about right. I never put up lights or a tree. It just seems like a waste of time, and something I'll just have to take down later. This year I have even less spirit than usual. I can't even seem to wish people "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas". My tongue stumbles whenever I try. Several people asked me yesterday if I was "ready for the holidays". Whatever that means. I said I still had gift buying I had to do.

And for goodness sake, keep the Christmas music away from me. I don't want to hear it.

Actually, there *are* actually a couple of Christmas songs I do like, they just aren't the ones you hear in stores. Somewhere among my cassette tapes (buried in a box right now, I think), is an old tape I made from a public radio show way back in the days before it was called Celtic Music, but the more accurate (but more wordy) "folk music of the British Isles." Archie Fisher singing "The Falcon" is on this tape, as is The Watersons singing "The Boar's Head Carol." Heck, nothing says Christmas to me more than the singing of The Watersons. I need to find that tape.

The Falcon
LULLY, lulley! lully, lulley!
The faucon bath borne my make away!

He bare him up, he bare him down,
He bare him into an orchard brown.

In that orchard there was an halle,
That was hangéd with purple and pall.

And in that hall there was a bed,
It was hangéd with gold sa red.

And in that bed there li’th a knight,
His woundés bleeding day and night.

At that bed’s foot there li’th a hound,
Licking the blood as it runs down.

By that bed-side kneeleth a may,
And she weepeth both night and day.

And at that bed’s head standeth a stone,
Corpus Christi written thereon.

Lully, lulley! lully, lulley!
The faucon bath borne my make away.

The Boar's Head Carol

The boar's head in hand bear I
Bedecked with bays and rosemary
I pray you, my masters, be merry
Quot estis in convivio (so many as are in the feast)

CHORUS: Caput apri defero, Reddens laudes domino (the boar's head I bring, giving praises to God)

The boar's head, as I understand,
Is the rarest dish in all this land,
Which thus bedecked with a gay garland
Let us servire cantico. (let us serve with a song)

CHORUS

Our steward hath provided this
In honor of the King of bliss
Which, on this day to be served is
In Reginensi atrio: (in the Queen's hall)
