This responsibility stuff is...strange

While we were considering programming at the library for the coming months, I asked what, if anything, we've done for Veteran's Day in the past. Evidently nothing really. So I suggested a project my Mom did at her school: having people bring in photos of their family members who have served/are serving in the Armed Forces. My boss suggests polling the staff, which I did via e-mail, and the director thinks it's a great idea, and in fact, wants to build on it.

This is how I came to be in charge of our first big Veteran's Day program, which will include our Local History room's military collection and potentially expand to include a grant regarding information on Civil War veterans in Illinois in time for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in 2011. Um, WHAT?

I realized via comments from other librarians and staff members that my experience to date is not average for new hires. It just happened that I got hired before the summer reading program and was literally dumped in the deep end (Full of sharks that look like small humans - do not be deceived!) where the book ordering/collection building/ALA conferencing/program running stuff happens. Which means the good experience I thought I was getting is actually GREAT experience. This is all fantastic, if a tad overwhelming.

I'm having my first meeting about the Veteran's Day project next week with the Local History room librarian. From there I'll write something for the newsletter, and figure out how to break up any submissions we get. Also I have to check on similar programs in other places.

Hello deep end, I see I haven't surfaced yet.
