I went in a little wary due to some negative and less-than-enthusiastic reviews, but I ended up absolutely loving the shit out of this film. With the exception of one mostly serious scene with the protagonist's parents, my brother and I were laughing pretty consistently throughout. It's certainly a weird movie, though, and if people don't already have a love/hate relationship with extreme philosophical thought, they won't like it. The movie manages to tread the middle ground by poking fun of said philosophy but presenting enough of it that the movie provides some philosophical value in itself.
One thing I particularly loved was the whole concept of the existential detectives--particularly once you realize that there are different detectives from multiple schools of thought, and these detectives are essentially battling over the psyches of the troubled just as good and evil angels battle over the souls of mankind in Zoroastrian theology. Unlike Zoroastrianism, however, neither extreme school of thought is lauded as completely correct, and the movie gains serious maturity points here by presenting the pros and cons of both sides but letting the viewer come up with the answers.
So if you're interested in the movie's absurd premise and you find philosophical humor amusing, then I heartily (hur hur) recommend this film! This is one DVD I will definitely be buying.
And a much briefer plug: I also dug the shit out of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, and will be snatching up that DVD as well. ^_^
