This was alright. I have some modifications I'd make if I was doing it again.
1 tsp olive oil
1 small Vidalia onion chopped
1 small Red Onion chopped
1/4 sweet red pepper finely chopped
1 tbsp garlic clove
1 medium tomatoes
1 can of tomato sauce
2 Tbsp cilantro
1 1/2 pound uncooked ground turkey breast
1 tsp table salt
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp Ground cumin
2 leaf bay leaf
2 Tbsp capers
4 Servings 6pnts per serving.
Pam a non-stick pan and brown meat with salt, pepper, and 1 tsp of cumin.
In a separate large pan sauté all of the onions together. Add garlic, and pepper, sauté until softened. Add tomatoes, 1 cup of water, Bay leaves, cumin, and cilantro. Lower heat and simmer.
Add meat to large pan continue cooking on med-low heat. Add capers and more salt if needed. Add tomato sauce. Simmer until thick.
So Picadillo is traditionally made with beef. I don't think the ground turkey really does this justice. Beef however makes it much higher in points. So in the end I think I'd do what I do with Meatloaf and use 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 turkey. The truth is that turkey cooked like this just absorbs the flavor of the surrounding stuff and doesn't provide much of it's own flavor. I hate to say it being the avid meat eater that I am, but truthfully this could probably be done with tofu as it's got the same quality here as turkey. As I don't cook with tofu I'll leave that experiment up to someone else.
When I served it I toasted flat buns in the oven and served them along with it. While that turned out pretty tasty, I think I'll go with the lettuce suggestion that I've read about this. Which is to serve it as a filler for a lettuce wrap. I think I would like that much more. As it was this turned out OK, I think I could do it better.
I considered it rather bland, but
writer_lynn and Erik thought that I was wrong on this front. More specifically they pointed out that I really like spicy food so to other people it was quite spicy and to me it was mild.
So in the end, if I make this again, I'll change to 1/2 turkey 1/2 ground beef and maybe I'll use a hotter pepper (though only if
writer_lynn isn't there).
