I had three domestic upsets that I had to replace this year, a few months after I could start saving in earnest, as I had stopped buying new supplements for the most part. They don't compare to real misfortune, but the microwave and tap needed replacing - well, I could have just replaced the washers on the tap spout it turns out - and the attic water tank sprang a leak, being made of metal and rusted through. The tap and microwave were around thirty years old and the attic tank at least fifty, and they all went within a month or two of each other. They say misfortune comes in threes, I think this is a synchronicity thing - one misfortune would be life, two a coincidence but three feels personal.
Giving up confectionery has really helped me save. It was hard as well, every time I go for milk they're all there, winking at me. I had a real weakness for a king size Twix. Bloody sugar.
