Archery

Piers and I went out to do archery today. I was going to go with Gabrielle and a girls-day out, but she is under the weather. He came with me last time as well - 2 out of 2 - so he is turning into my archery buddy. It's ironic since this is the only SCA activity we do together.

I took the guy's advice from last time and left my bow at home and rented a 20 pound one. It made such a difference. I was on target over 90% of the time and the rest was due to arrows bouncing off the target than me not hitting it. Piers and I were the only two there, so we played with moving the targets farther and farther back.

My goal is to shoot once a month for December, January, and February, and then to go to Late Winter Shoot on March 19. When I first decided this in September, the idea of me shooting IKAC at an event was a joke. Now I think I will be able to do it and not even end up with a zero score. :)

I have been corresponding by email with Daffyd, the Kingdom Archery Marshal. Not only is he an amazing archer, but he seems to be a nice guy. I once was talking with a guy (Archery-snob) about my plans to buy a bow and shoot once a month and he informed me that I would be wasting my time - that a person had to shoot 1,000 arrows a week to be any good. Daffyd, unlike Archery-snob did not pass judgment on my once-a-month plans and instead concluded our series of emails by telling me that he'd see me on March 19. Of course, the irony is that Archery-snob does not shoot at all since he can't find a place that he can afford to shoot his 1,000 arrows a week. So, if I stick to my plan, in the course of a year, I will have shot 12 more times than Archery-snob. :)
