It turns out I really REALLY liked these two episodes. I have no complaints whatsoever about them:
- the plot twists were surprising and exciting;
- the action was spot-on;
- there was no dragging the narrative at any moment in either episode;
- the acting was top notch:
----- Ray Wise is fantastic;
----- someone needs to freaking give Enver Gjokaj his own series because he played a better Topher than actual Topher [who is ugly and whiny and I wanna punch him in the face all the time];
----- Maurissa Tancharoen as Kilo! *crushes*
----- and as I said on Twitter, Summer Glau makes EVERYTHING better, and this was not different. I can't wait to see where Bennett is going.
- then there's the bonus of Miracle Laurie being the prettiest girl on TV right now, and her chemistry with Agent Helo is always out of scale [o hai OTP!] and I LOVE IT that they're giving Mellie/November/Madeleine a longer and more engaging storyline;
- and then there's the fact that I spent half the episode going FAITH AND WESLEY TOGETHER AGAIN OMFG I 'SHIPPED THEM SO HARD ON ANGEL, and it's amazing how Alexis Denisof seems to bring the best out of Eliza Dushku.
So. All in all, two extremely awesome episodes that almost make me sad the show's been canceled.
But not really, because all through the awesomeness there's one thought that keeps bugging me, and this is why I can't EVER really love this show -- the premise changed from skeevy to let's obfuscate the skeevy with government conspiracies.
I have a feeling that the network notes for S2 were all along the lines of Dear Joss, plis to be getting THE HELL away from the Dollhouse-as-a-Whorehouse plots because the internets [as in professional critics and fandom] are filled with people saying this show is skeevy.
And this is the solution -- you make the LA Dollhouse into the good guys because hey look -- there's some place else with people even eviler than us, and yes, we are a little evil and immoral but they're worse and we'll fight them and magically turn into good guys because being the lesser of evils won't really matter if we beat the bigger evil.
Except Adele is still the master of slaves -- and we just got proof that she can still exert power over Madeleine; and Topher is still a creepy little sociopath [who actually ENJOYED provoking pain on Kilo], and hi there, the Dollhouse is still a Whorehouse who will send Echo as Bree-the-hooker to Senator Wesley, even if it is to save him, but she has to be a hooker first.
It's a cheap trick -- it's the narrative equivalent of a magician's sleight of hand. It's misdirection at its best, it's manipulative and disturbing writing at its worst.
And the show's premise is STILL SKEEVY.

In other news, T-Minus 2 hours until the unbearable noise starts. I love football, but I hate obnoxious football fans. Trufax.
