I had never watched American Idol before this season, but Sony is showing it 3 nights a fucking week, it's pretty much impossible to avoid it.
What I do is I watch the beginning, so I can point and laugh at the hairs and outfits. Then, when someone goes up on stage to sing, I change channels [usually to the news or to whatever football game is on].
I give it a couple of minutes then I go back and watch the judges, because Randy Jackson's related to the coolest man on Earth, and Simon Cowell is a great actor [I ignore Paula because her eyes freak me out].
Then, someone else starts to sing and I change channels once again, and only come back when the music is done. 'Cause seriously. The chicks all sound either like Celine Dion post-Titanic or Whitney Houston before the crack pipe. And the dudes all sound like Michael Bolton [ewww], except for the bald dude who sounds like Joe Cocker on steroids.
In short: I watch everything but the singing. *g*

Speaking of music. I was looking at my Winamp stats and came to realize that I'm listening to a whole lot of alt.country lately. And I mean A LOT. From Wilco's earlier records to Jenny Lewis' newest one, and everything in between. To the point where I was picking songs to make a "current" mix for my father and became worried that he'll mock me because of all the banjos.
But I guess it makes the kind of sense that doesn't: the indie bands have become the new pop [Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, add all generic copies of both here] and I wish they'd GO AWAY so I can at least miss them. And I can't stand any of the emo dudes [with the exception of Bright Eyes, but I giggle incessantly with every single one of his lyrics, and I don't think that was his intention, like, AT ALL], so all I'm left with is the alt.country that.won't.stop.
[Okay, not really. There's the Decemberists too. And britpop and twee girly music and a couple of dead guys named Jeff and Elliott. But you get my meaning.]
But hey, it's not like it's bad. It's just very very weird. And could be worse. At least I'm not listening to angry chicks anymore.

In other news, playing Grant-Lee Buffalo's Sing Along on my guitar is one of my favorite things in the whole world. :)
ETA:
I heart Susanna Clarke *so much*.
