Family Portrait, Until It Swallows me Whole, and 10 reasons to hate Ray Kowalski, by Raymond Vecchi0

Title: Family Portrait
Author: Journey
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 446k
Why I'm reccing this fic:

This is my ultimate comfort fic. I think that I have probably read it 10 or 15 times and it never ceases to make me happy. It is funny and sweet and an absolutly realistic picture of Ray attempting to raise his children by himself after Stella's death and dealing with his feelings about falling in love with a man. Fraser is gun-shy and scared and afraid that he will always be alone because he can't see himself as ever belonging. I just can't say enough good things about it!

Shockingly, he felt Ray nuzzle his hair. Surprised, he half-turned to meet Ray's eyes.

"Sorry about that." Ray's face was red with heat and/or embarrassment. "You know how it is. You get your hands full and suddenly your nose starts to ...." His voice trailed off and he stopped. Time seemed to stand still.

"Starts to what?" Fraser's voice was hardly above a whisper.

"Itch," Ray finished.

"Oh," said Fraser, wondering what they were talking about. Their smell and Ray's eyes and the feel of Ray's sweaty skin sliding against his own was.... disconcerting.

"So, you think you could..."

"Could what, Ray?" Fraser felt very strange.

".......maybe finish up here? My arms aren't going to last much longer."

Why I'm reccing this fic: I think that part of what makes it so wonderful is that it is simulatneously a first time story and a last time story. Justbreathe 80 explores Ray and Benny's last time before Ray leaves for Vegas. Through out the entire story, there is such hope building, and even if you dislike the thought of Vecchio naked, you can't help but cheer when Ray finally stops freaking out and lets himself love Benny. It is so beautiful simply as a first time story, because she exactly captures the uncertainty and wonder of starting a relationship. But then when you consider that this is also the only time that they have together, it adds a real poignancy to this story. I still am in total awe of how she manages to convey the entire story of Ray's motivation to leave for Vegas in hints and bits. (As a writer, if I could show instead of tell like that ... I'd never stop writing!) Amazingly AWESOME story, and it might just be one of my favorite Fraser/Vecchio stories ever writen.

Suddenly, like a switch had flipped, Fraser’s mouth was on his, and holy shit, they were kissing, and before he could even understand it, make a decision, Fraser’s hand came up to cup Ray’s jaw.

Wow, okay, and Ray’s hand came up to Fraser’s neck, and he used his hand in the front of Fraser’s uniform to pull Fraser’s chest into his, and felt Fraser’s mouth open up. Ray was trying to keep himself from shaking, from flying apart, because he had no idea, no fucking idea -- because this felt like something he hadn’t even known he needed.

Why I'm reccing this fic:

This is the first Ray/Ray story that I ever read, and it just made me fall in absolute LOVE with this pair! Snark and sex and denial and just wonderful goodness. It has the wonderful supernatural quality that Due South embodies and the dialogue is just spot on. I don't know what else to say about it without spoiling the story, so just read it, and discover the wonderfulness for yourself!

“Nnrgh!“ he growled, making angry claws in the air. “Stop thinking you know me, Vecchio. You don’t. I quit all my disgusting addictions, okay? I’m a clean slate. Have been for over a month.”

That should’ve shocked me to my senses, maybe, but at the time it was all too strange. To hear him talking in my voice, to see his postures and gestures with my frame, to be outside myself like this.

He’d taken all his cool with him when we switched, the bastard. Taken over my body like spring takes over a garden, and left me with unruly hair I didn’t know what to do with, bad eyesight, and ribs you could count through a sports jacket. And for a moment, I didn’t even give a shit: I just wanted to grab him and fuck him. There, over the back of the couch. Up against the wall. Wherever.

I wanted to fuck you in my own body. How fucking screwed up is that, Kowalski? How fucking crazy?
