Rating: NC-17
Length medium
Why I'm reccing this fic: I recently found out that I FAILED as a pimp and that mrsronweasley has somehow never read this story, which is honestly one of my top ten fics in the whole damn fandom. Fraser loves Ray, he loves Ray, he has always loved Ray. Everything in Fraser's world leads back to Ray, and he is trying so very hard to distract himself from it, and he CAN'T.

And he gets drunk and he comes to Ray's apartment and just - god, it KILLS me, how much Fraser loves Ray in this fic. You can FEEL it in the writing. Her writing has a rhythm to it, a steady pulse that drags you in. It's fucking amazing.

They looked at a Lancer, an Accord, and two Honda Civics. Finally, Ray patted the second Civic. "This one," he said. He jammed the dipstick back into its slot and wiped his hands off on his jeans. "Oil's leaking, but I can fix that. Uh... brakes, alternator, battery okay. And there's 20,000 miles left on the timing chain." He looked at Fraser hard. "You sure you want a car?"

Ray had stripped down to a black tank top. He smelled of grease and sweat. There was a dark smudge across his shoulder.

"I'm sure, yes."

"Okay, well...." Ray's voice faltered for a moment. "Well, this is a good price. It's a decent buy."

That evening, Fraser's class studied declensions. The letters shifted on the page like sand, like tea leaves in a cup. Fraser imagined swirling them with his fingertips over and over until they told him something new. He held his new car key, pressed the spine of it into his palm. After a while, the words were declensions again.

Why I'm reccing this fic: I cannot say enough about this fic. It is the NECESSARY Due South story, something you must read. Min understands Ray Kowalski and his history and how he wears his heart on his goddamn sleeve. She loves Chicago like Ray does, with all of her heart. She knows the city is something that makes Ray who he is. The way Ray talks about Comisky Park makes me flail with joy.

This IS Ray's history in my head. This is the Ray I am thinking about when I write him. This is about Ray, through and through, and it IS Ray/Fraser, yeah, but it's just - at its heart, it's a love song to Ray Kowalski.

And I cannot come up with a better quote from this fic than the one in its summary:

Ray loves Stella like he loves breathing, loves Fraser like he loves his tattoo, loves Chicago like he loves everything permanent in his life.

But my other favorite part, that stuck with me, is this:

Then one night he passed Comiskey and there was this piece of fence all bent up, like people'd been going under it, and he just couldn't help himself -- he crawled under and stole this chunk of concrete, nothing special at all, but it'd been part of that stadium, so he wanted it, he didn't know why, but he did.

Ray keeps his chunk of Old Comiskey Park in a drawer by his bed, never told Stella he stole it, never told his dad or any of the guys from his old neighborhood. He knows it's there, and it's sort of comforting. The Emperor tore it down and carted it away, but he didn't get all of it.

Ray's still got a piece, and he hangs onto it.
