oblique dS love

I was just discussing Victoria with my sister, and felt this wacky urge to squee about the dS fandom. That might sound weird at first, but the reason is like this -- a Pierce Brosnan Bond movie can afford to have not-so-spectacular Bond Girls in it, as long as the Villain more than makes up for the lack of sexy and pretty (see Sean Bean). More precisely, one can judge the mettle of a show by the calibre of its Villain.

Of course this doesn't apply in the exact same way when we talk about Victoria Metcalf, (for one thing, there is NO lack of sexy and pretty on the part of Fraser and the Rays), because she's only the Villain for one episode, but in terms of "fanon" I think she's very significant. I am one of the many fangirls who were sucked in to dS after reading one splendid fanfic; although my staple is F/K, that is not the only pairing I read. It doesn't matter which Ray is in the story with Fraser, however, because everytime Victoria shows up, some big sh*t is going down.

After having binge-read a tower of fanfics, I squeed at my sister about Victoria, "she is such a Magnificent Plot Device!" I mean, in any plot-driven story, when Obstacles must be overcome, the Villain hurts/threatens the Heroes in some way. Every fandom has specific Villains that are fan-favorites because of their unique abilities to touch/shake the heroes in the most vulnerable and defenceless place. Most often, a male villain kidnaps/injures one of the heroes to damage him physically, or a female villain deceives/betrays one of the heroes to damage him emotionally. That's a sexist generalization and stereotypical to boot, but it's so common on TV and even more in fanfiction.

That's where Victoria shines through! She can shoot a gun and chew gum at the same time; she had Fraser giving up everything to go with her even after she SHOT DIEF! She can do serious damage to Fraser, both emotionally and physically, and she sure ain't afraid to damage either Ray, and in doing damage to one, she also threatens and hurts Fraser. She's got the motive (Fraser ruined her plans *twice*!), the brains (she left no fingerprints etc), the looks (do I need to feel you for a pulse?), the determination (taking on a Mountie and a Chicago cop in the pursuit of revenge), the cold-blooded-ness (she SHOT DIEF ferchrissakes!!), and the chutzpah. And to top it all off, she's the Loose End that canon didn't tie off properly; she's still out there and she can come back at anytime to wreak havoc on the guys, and it's plausible because 3rd time's the charm and all that, and THEY WOULDN'T EVEN SEE IT COMING!! AUUGHH!! *covers eyes and hides* How many other fandoms can claim they have a cool Badass like Victoria?

so yeah, dS is AWESOME!

*is nuts*
