I was thinking today, as I walked home from work, about the most infamous "experiment" in this country to legislate morality. I'm talking, of course, about Prohibition and how well that went. Today, we only need look at the scars on our Constitution to remind us of how wrong the country can go when it tries to change the consitution so that it RESTRICTS freedom. They can talk all they want about an amendment to ban gay marriage. Should it pass, as unlikely as it might seem today, I've no doubt that we'll eventually see an amendment rescinding it.
Of course, in an ideal world, we never let it get that far in the first place. But, I take comfort in the fact that our mistakes are there plainly to learn from in our constitution.
