How is it that one Honda dealership can say "Yes, that is a known problem with the 2003 Civic's. It will cost you $130 to have it fixed." and the other dealership says "We are unaware of that being a known problem. We'll charge you $125 just to investigate what is wrong and then let you know how much more we'll need to charge you once we've ( Read more... )

Probably one dealership is either more efficient or savvy than the other. Or just keeps more up to date on whats going on with their products. It's kind of like tech support in some regards. Depending on which tech (or car service rep) you get, there will be varying levels of competency.

Franchises, with different ownership/management priorities.

Dealership service 1 - People have a choice about where to take their car for service. The way to make money is through repeat business. Your job is to treat the customer in such a manner as to make them want to come back here again.

Dealership service 2 - People only bring their car to the dealership for service if they have no other choice/money is not their concern. Therefore, in order to make the most money, charge them whatever you can, including running diagnostics for known problems.
