So I was looking up how long to boil eggs on google, and there was a link on the side of the result page for a clip of a chicken...place in Ohio. Basically, a bunch of animal activists worked there for a while, and they got film of some of the bad shit there. This would include hens getting horrible infections that are ignored, wings and necks and legs getting caught in places and the hens dying because they can't reach water or food, dead chickens being left in the cages when they aren't noticed by the employees, and at least one case of the skin on the back of a particular hen's neck getting caught on a metal hook, leaving her hanging as though being executed...except with a giant bloody gash in the back of her neck. So, that was pretty terrible. I'm really regretting those three eggs I just ate (although I'd like to point out we've been getting free-range eggs for quite some time). Then I thought, against my original (and better) judgement, I'd click on one of the links for another clip on that site. It was about meat in general. First it showed more chickens, some of the same clips from the first video, as well as sick turkeys being bashed with a metal pole and then left to die (this is apparently the norm? according to the narration...). Next, cows. A bull was shown being castrated, having his horns cut off, and then being branded as he rattled around in the metal cage (remember, no anaesthesia for any of this) and cried. Then it showed a few shots of cows being crammed into small spaces, and of some dead cows, one didn't look full-grown, still crammed in with the other cows on what seemed to be a truck for transport. The cows reached the factory, and there was a shot of two cows on a mechanical line, hanging by one foot, thrashing about, as the narrator said "Next, the cows' throats are slit..."
This is where I closed the window. Maybe later I'll go back and try to finish it. Part of me wants to. But I can't until my parents leave, or at least go downstairs, because when I told my mother about it, she asked me why in hell I would watch that, and about five minutes later my parents began mocking me for listening to "emo music" (The Decemberists). First of all, I'd like to say that I'd been listening to The Decemberists for quite some time before they came in, and second, I've gone several weeks without an emo night and I need to vent. Really I'm just waiting for them to leave for paint stuff. I hope they go soon... I wish Wilson wasn't working tonight...
On a completely different note, I still do hate john, not least of all for the feeling I get looking at him. I discovered this looking at his profile picture on facebook...
