So here I am. 22 years old. A couple of college credits under my belt and I may have found a career already. Through a friend at work, my mom was able to get me an interview with this man named Curt who works for a company called Event Solutions International (ESI). Their website,
www.eventman.com, may be more helpful than the explaination I will give here, so check it out. Basically, when a new car is introduced to the market, the manufacturer wants to display its potential. They want to prove their off-road vehicle is capable of climbing rough terrain or their sports car can speed through a test track in under 2 minutes. That's where ESI comes in. We build that rough terrain...we make that test track. We build the tents that protect the cars and people from the elements. If we are in a large parking lot, we will bring in dirt or build ramps and hills to accomadate the car makers requests. We are also able to drive the cars from show to show. Anyway, I think you get the gist. I went through two days of training this past Monday and Tuesday, and I passed all the necessary tests required by ESI to prove I can handle the work. I was told during the introduction that we work 9-12 hour days. To me, that's nothing. After working 12-14 hour days with the pool company for nearly 8 years straight, handling this should be childs play. I'll make over $100 a day, and the more I learn and become responsible for, the more I'll earn per day. The company pays for all of my flights, all of the hotels I stay in and they even give me $35 a day for food and whatever else I need, along with an extra $5 for ATM withdrawl fees. They also use Direct Deposit, so I never have to worry about paychecks or not being able to access my money while I'm out on the road. Which brings me to another good point: The traveling. I received a call this morning (two days after training, mind you) from a woman with ESI, asking me if I was able to start on a job. I couldn't believe that I was requested after two days of tryouts. I was told I wouldn't be called for at least a week after training, but I'm not complaining =0). She said that they need a few people to join in a show that is already in progress. I'll be leaving this Saturday and flying into New York for a week long show that is in East Rutherford, N.J. I'll be there from the 17th until the 23rd or 24th. Then I'm home for a week, and back out again on May 1st. Starting on May 1st, I'll be flown out to Boston where I will begin a three-city tour (where exactly, I'm not sure at this moment) that ends May 23rd. So I will be gone almost all of May. This is crazy!! I called Volvo today to tell them I quit. My boss, Dave, is out of town for the rest of the weekend, so when I go in tomorrow to get my paycheck, I'll have to tell someone else I'm done. As for the pool company, I will talk to Wes when I get back and work out a deal so that the weeks I'm not working with ESI, I can work with swimming pools. It looks like everything is falling into place right now. I hope it continues.
One of the nice things about this job is that I'll be out of Michigan and free to check out the USA. Since I'll be working quite a bit, and ESI covers basically everything I'd normally have to spend money on, I'll have a wonderful oppertunity to save my cash. With all this traveling, I plan on FINALLY buying a laptop, and then I'm going for a new car. How can I get to work without reliable transportation? Anyway, this is pretty long, so I'm going to stop here...I suppose my next update will be when I return!!! Until then, feed my plants and water my cat. PEACE I'M OUTTA HERE!!!
