Driving in a car with someone you don't know very well can be an awkward experience. Particularly when it comes to the music selection. I've been driving my uncle Dan home from work on occasion because he lets one of the kids drive him to work and then take the car. The first trip home I decided on no music. It's only a 15 minutes drive and we ( Read more... )

Hey, this is Terra's Jesse.

She told me that you were going to see a show at the Triple Rock and I got nostalgic. I'll tell you everything you need to know!

The neighborhood is a pretty classic old punk West Bank neighborhood. Around the corner you've got the Hard Times Cafe - go eat there and drink their coffee. Around the other corner you have Mayday Books. It's a volunteer non-profit subversive place. A few co-op groceries too. There's also another venue somewhere across the street.

It's also by Augustus (Or something like that), a small private religious school. The reason why it looks sketchy is because it's by a couple of low rent apartment complex that the West African immigrants frequent. By no means are these people dangerous, but they do frequent the many West African businesses that popped up and tend to exhibit behaviors we associate with sketchy, i.e. hanging around on the curb outside of a store. Here in Minnesota? Looks like you're dealing drugs and ready to punch the crap out of some skinny white dude with glasses.

However, there are usually some drug dealers outside of the Hard Times. But what do you expect from a cafe that tells you to give your leftovers to the hungry looking homeless guy who they let sit in the corner? The Hard Times topped the conservative right winger's list for potential terrorist threats. Now that's a cafe!

That being said, the Triple Rock is by far the best venue around. The bar is great, and usually a pretty straight up tattooed punk joint. They have the best brunch around. Go eat there too. You caught it at a bad night with the indie band playing. They're just about the only open and willing all ages club in town, so the crowd varies and they always have awesome shows. Big acts like playing there, local acts always get stage time. The whole place is owned/runned by Paddy from Dillinger Four. You can usually see him or Eric hanging around behind the bar.

Anyway, all done. That's me geeking out about my old hangout. Hope you enjoy my homestate!

Hey Jesse! Nice to finally "meet" you. I've heard much about you (all good things). Anyways, thanks for the DL on the triple rock. Once I got inside it was actually a very nice venue. I think I just showed up on a poor night. I definately got the west african feel from the neighborhood and the majority of the people walking around seemed very nice, but as in any city there's always a few odd folks that you run into. Clearly, I was fine, and now I know what to expect if I go back.

I enjoyed the bar. The people there seemed nice, and the only downfall of the night was that I'm new here and don't really know anyone. I also enjoy being overdramatic in blogs. That's what they're there for. Also, I love brunch! I had a long standing tradition of Sunday brunch while in Milwaukee and I'm definately missing that. I'll have to check out the Hard Times, sounds like a pretty cool place.

If you've got any other suggestions let me know. I bummed around St. Paul for a bit last weekend and saw some fun looking neighborhoods. I'm looking forward to more exploring. Anyways, take care, thanks for the message.

-Mike
