Until Next Year [10/10] anonymous October 10 2011, 02:20:59 UTC
For what felt like the first time in ages, Izaya successfully returned home feeling fulfilled. It wasn't just a matter of his job or distracting himself or becoming comfortable with the idea that his children were gone. He was accepting it slowly, getting closer each and every day to the fact that his children were out there living their lives without regret.

A new sense of dread entered him when he looked around the bare home and thought he was okay with its emptiness. In his youth, he preferred this lavish display of space which was nothing more than for his sole enjoyment. Now that he had shared it with others, it felt like a skeleton, lacking all the life and energy that made a human being come alive.

Without thinking, he opened the door of Hachimenroppi and Tsukishima's joint room and stopped in the doorway.

"Shizu-chan, what are you doing...?"

The blond sat upright before Izaya finished speaking. And no, he couldn't hide those cherry blush cheeks behind that pillow. Izaya had to blink to fully register that Shizuo was no longer curled up on the bed that was two sizes too small for him with a pillow wedged against his chest.

Shizuo threw the pillow back into place but before he could make an escape, Izaya shoved him back onto the bed. In that familiar way he was so accustomed to Shizuo holding him, he wrapped an arm around his husband's shoulders.

The two of them stared around for some time, not saying anything but enjoying the memories of their children flood into the reels of the mind. In this room, it was as if time stood still, like if they were to walk out of the room right now, Hachimenroppi or Tsukishima would be there waiting with confused, blinking eyes, forever frozen at age five.

"Do you remember twenty years ago?" Shizuo asked randomly.

"Do protozoans even remember that long ago?" But Izaya said it sweetly, unlike how he would have when they first met. Shizuo wrinkled his nose unsatisfactorily. Apparently he couldn't tell the difference. The informant sighed, rephrasing, "What about twenty years ago? That's a long time."

"It was really noisy back then."

"Every day was noisy," Izaya corrected. Really, he didn't understand why he missed that ruckus. Back then he would have given anything to change his life and now he wanted nothing more than for those days to return.

"Yeah. You bitched about it a lot." Shizuo laughed a little bit. He licked his lips, biting down on them as he remembered what their lives used to be. "But I don't think this is too bad now."

"I miss my little monsters," Izaya grumbled. It would be the first and last time he would ever admit it.

"You don't have to," Shizuo said while squeezing Izaya's thigh and smiling up at a collection of crayon drawings titled "My Family." "They'll all be back for Christmas."

This was absolutely perfect! I cried and laughed in almost every chapter! Makes me wish there was a sequel, like when they all get together at christmas or after that, when others beside Delic finally bring their dates to meet their parents.

While I'm responding here really quickly, Thank you all for taking a second or two to leave me a note but especially to those who were brave enough to admit that they cried. This subject is really personal to me so I am sincerely and deeply thankful for every one of you.

Now to you in particular, anon. In regards to a sequel, I won't write anything that involves significant others but I can write a Christmas get together. I actually thought about ending with a Christmas scene but I didn't think it would leave the right after flavor in the mouth. At the moment of typing this, I still don't think a sequel will simmer correctly and after seeing this response, I have to admit that I am very intimidated to write a follow up because I fear that it won't live up to expectations.

But that said, I am a sucker when people ask for things and I do have an outline so I will try my hardest. I have a handful of other fills I'm working on but I will try to squeeze in some time to write it.

As a person who agonizes about getting older and each second lost, the haunting and mounting sense of loss in this was beautifully tormenting. I really did cry in earnest. Where did those 30 years go?

I think a sweet sequel would be lovely as a photograph into the "it isn't over yet/they're not gone forever" part of their lives.

And if not, this is still one of my favorites. Thank you for this.
