"Ten minutes," Tsukishima clarified, nearly at the same time. He was clinging onto Shizuo's sleeve with one hand and Izaya's with the other. He'd been holding on since they left the apartment. Of all their children, he had been the one most hesitant about leaving. It was Hachimenroppi who convinced him that he should move out and if anything happened, that he would be a mere train ride away.
Shizuo and Izaya were both trying to look anywhere besides Tsukishima or his wibbling crimson eyes would surely get the better of them both. Unfortunately Tsukishima grabbed both of them by the waist and hugged them together.
Hachimenroppi growled softly before wedging in from the other end, demanding similar attention. Shizuo pat both of their back, frowning deeply. Izaya pretended not to hear the sniffle. He could tell whether it was Shizuo or Tsukishima or maybe it had been both. Since the other four had left, Shizuo had been spending so much time with Tsukishima and Hachimenroppi as a final effort to cling onto something that was destined to leave him that Izaya wouldn't be surprised if he could finish the sentences the other two started.
"Better get going then." Shizuo tugged the three toward the platform all by himself. Tsukishima's and Hachimenroppi's roller luggage clinked in the grooves of the floor after the clicks of their shoes.
The train hadn't yet arrived but the board on top of the platform counting down five minutes until its arrival made it all the more real. One of the small numbers flicked into a four, counting down yet another minute that was lost.
"This is the right place," Izaya said out loud, if for nothing more than the sake of saying something out loud. Hachimenroppi nodded and Tsukishima just grabbed the sleeves harder. "You don't have to go if you don't want to, Tsukishima."
Their youngest shook his head from side to side stubbornly. "I'm going...!"
"Don't push yourself too hard," Shizuo said softly, patting the boy roughly on the head. Hachimenroppi stepped forward with a frown, also wanting a hair ruffle. Shizuo did so happily with the first real laugh since he began to dread his boys leaving.
On the timetable, the four began a three.
Shizuo grabbed Hachimenroppi by the shoulder, glaring at him seriously. "You have to watch out for Tsuki."
Tsukishima's face flushed red. He pushed Shizuo away and rewrapped his scarf, embarrassed by the impication that he needed somebody to watch over him. "I can take care of myself!"
"I'll watch him," Hachimenroppi agreed, smiling softly at his tomato of a twin brother.
Izaya swallowed thickly. He could only manage a nod at Hachimenroppi but by the boy's widened eyes, he was sure that his son had received the message that if anything happened to Tsukishima, he'd hunt Hachimenroppi down. Same went for Tsukishima. "You, too, Tsukishima."
"Yes!" he chirped with a newfound vigor. He grabbed Hachimenroppi's wrist and nodded seriously. It was an odd expression on their teary eyed son's face but not an unfitting one.
When the three became a two, the sound of a train chugging forward closer and closer by the second ominously approached. It wasn't fair. The train arrived before the two became a one. It was stealing his time from his children!
Why was Shizu-chan so adamant about hauling their luggage inside? Couldn't they just catch the next one? With his connections, he could probably arrange a jet. They could leave later and arrive sooner! At the very least, he at least knew some hapless souls in the taxi industry who could drive the two directly to their destinations. It was after he thought of every possibility that Shizuo had returned from settling the luggage and Tsukishima and Hachimenroppi were both hugging him tightly.
"Bye, daddy."
When he tried to hold on tighter, the doors of the train were already closing and his two sons were on the other side of the glass. Tsukishima waved excitedly back and forth. Shizuo returned the gesture and their parents walked alongside the train as it rolled by until it reached the end of the platform.
Shizuo continued to wave even after Tsukishima and Hachimenroppi's faces disappeared. Izaya grabbed his still waving arm when the train started to crawl like a tiny ant into the distance.
