Strange How I Fit
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
Pairing: Roy Mustang/Maes Hughes/Gracia Hughes
Rating: PG
Summary: sutlers did it.

She loved him because he was rough, unsanded, like the sides of the house she grew up in. Unfinished. Imperfect.

Everything and nothing like Hughes.

He loved her because he thrived on guilt, thinking things he knew he shouldn't and acting on them, like a child staring at a barbed wire cookie jar. His hands bled every day Hughes was dispatched to the East, but he couldn't stop. Neither could she.

"Gracia--"

"Stay for dinner."

"It's…I can't, Gracia. Don't you get it?"

Gracia got it. She had known what Roy's cologne smelled like before she ever had it on her own pillow. She knew, but he didn't know she knew. That was too awkward.

But so were they.

So I will share this room with you
And you will have this heart to break

Hughes felt Roy in his house even when he wasn't there. He smelled Roy in his bedroom when he came back to Central, all over his sheets and in his bathroom. He knew Roy's smell, how it worked its way into all the fabrics, which is why he went through so many shirts. But why--

"Roy. Did you?"

Roy knew he was in trouble if the questions didn't have verbs or nouns.

"I--…Maes, I…"

"Do you love her?"

"Yes."

"Do you love me?"

"All the time."

"I'm not getting any more transfers, you slick bastard." Roy felt his heart drop, but the feeling went away when he saw how Hughes' face looked. "What happened, you went over to keep her company while I was away and she couldn't resist your swarthy charms?"

"My swarthy charms are amazing. They got you in bed, didn't they?"

"How do you know that wasn't my swarthy charms?"

"Because your beard makes me itch."

"My wife likes it."

"She's got weird tastes."

"Yeah, she slept with you."

"I hate you."

"Dinner tonight?"

"Only if your wife is cooking."

"And here I thought you liked jam on crackers."

So I will choose to stay with you
And you can have this heart to break
