The Book of Eli is about one half of a great movie. The casting is tremendous, the actors (especially the supporting cast) seems to be genuinely enjoying their roles -- especially Tom Waits as a sort of post-apocalyptic mechanic and Micheal Gambon as a crazy guntoter -- and Denzel Washington brings forth his trademark gravitas and charisma.
But the plot is paint-by-numbers, the twist at the end is not really shocking nor unpredictable, the villain's motivation is sketchy at best, the characters aren't very developed and there are gaping plot holes. Although, the cinematography is phenomenal, the music is pretty decent and the action sequences are pretty awesome.
