So, I went to see Orphan last night, and I have to say that despite a third act collapse and a really silly plot twist that was about as useful and necessary to the story as a Mozart Sonata is to the youngest child in the movie, I really liked it. It boasted the best cinematography I have seen in a mainstream American release in years, favored creepy over gorey, and used cinematic techniques other than just having each character loudly vocalize their motivations and troubled pasts like a broken record.
SPOILERS:
The effective cinematography, not telling use everything, and use of diagetic and non-diagetic sound all helped create a great creepy story. I think less blood and more of a subtle evil would have suited Esther better, as well as excising the final reveal of her character as a much older woman with dwarfism, capped teeth and makeup to help her resemble a young girl, but whatever. The story does redeem it's faults with a really quite awesome conclusion in which the mother and youngest daughter have to face their past involving an accident.
All in all, I would give it an 8. It could have easily been a 10 if they had spent a little more time polishing it, and making the characters just a little more coherent.
