Neil Gaiman is a fucking genius. All you need to do is read one book and one short story by him and see that they are totally fucking unrelated and brilliant on so many levels that the level of his intellect and creativity is staggering. For example, compare Anansi Boys to Babycakes. One is a wonderfully accessible story about two brothers who get inbroiled in an insurance scam. Except that all the birds in the world want to kill them, and everyone seems to confuse the two. And I can not go further for risk of spoilers. The other is a short, pithy and downright disturbing story about the end of the human race; less than two pages long and probably the scariest thing I have ever read. If I weren't a vegetarian already, it would make me become one.
Also, I bought Coraline last week. I have a soft spot in my heart for stop motion animation, and Henry Selick is probably the Woody Allen of stop motion. Most of the mainstream stuff does tend to be really dark and eerie, but the last four big stop motion films have been made either by Selick (Coraline), Tim Burton (Corpse Bride) or the two in tandem (Nightmare, James and the Giant Peach). Both were uncredited inbetweeners on The Fox and the Hound... yes I am a nerd, thanks for asking.
I had forgotten how weird and frightening the movie was, especially when the other world starts breaking down and showing itself for what it really is. I am amazed that it was marketed and released as a kid's film, as creepy to me is much scarier and much more effective than gorey, something that video game producers need to realize. This is why Silent Hill is better than Dead Space. Well that and that Dead Space has little to offer but startles, and three year olds can effectively startle.
