Our Masked Neighbor

The area of Arlington that Marc and I live in is quite green and woody, and as such, there’s quite a bit more wildlife than one would expect to find only 15 minutes from downtown DC.  When I go walking in the woods nearby I frequently see rabbits, there’s a fox that lives near Marc’s family’s house (they’re only 3 minutes away), and the birds are impossible to sleep through in the mornings sometimes.

One critter that I didn’t think about, however, is the one animal that you do often find in areas that are woodsy but still have a high density of human settlement.  The furball I speak of is the raccoon.

There are no less than three raccoons in the immediate vicinity of our apartment, it seems, and while we were sitting out on the patio a few nights ago, we had a somewhat amusing run-in with two of them.  Marc wrote about it in a far more humorous way than I ever could, so I suggest you go read his account here:   Close encounters with local wildlife…
