They were all excited. The FBI’s Annual Convention that year took place in one of the most incredible cities in the world: Las Vegas, Nevada. Since one of the main subjects was missing person’s investigations, Jack Malone and his team were invited to assist in some lectures. Leaving a back up team back in New York, Jack, Vivian, Danny, Martin, and Sam landed in McCarran International Airport and soon were driven to MGM Grand Hotel, where the convention would took place.
Danny was the most excited. He could barely wait until lecture recesses to get to know “Sin city”. Only Jack and Martin had ever been there. Jack was there with Maria, years ago. He was impressed how the city had changed since. Martin was there 4 times before, with friends from college, and bachelor’s parties, when he lived in Seattle. Vivian and Samantha were astonished with the cities extravagances, on the short drive to the hotel.
They saw the golden bar that was the Mandalay Bay, the huge black pyramid and the sphinx from Luxor, the medieval castle from Excalibur, the famous and traditional Tropicana Hotel, and the familiar New York skyline.
Across the street was the MGM Grand Hotel, the biggest in town, and one of the biggest in the world. It was an impressive construction, not because of its façade, simple in comparison to the other buildings, but because of its size.
The team entered the huge lobby and checked in. The Bureau had booked a whole wing of the hotel. The agents got their keys and a bellboy showed then the way to their rooms. The hotel was enormous, and left alone, they would most likely get lost.
That night would be a welcome dinner at 6 PM at Nob Hill restaurant, and the lectures started at 10, the next morning.
The younger agents agreed take a walk on the “Strip” after dinner. Danny couldn’t wait!
The rooms were on the 26th floor, Martin’s room between Viv’s and Sam’s, Danny’s across the corridor, and Jack’s room was on the opposite corner, next to the elevator. Entering the rooms, they went speechless with the magnificent view of the Strip. Danny and Jack’s rooms had a view to the opposite side, to the golf camp. Danny complained that wasn’t fair that his room didn’t have a view, and, after lots of whimpering, Viv agreed to change rooms - and views -with Danny.
It was dinner time and the team met in front of the elevator, going down to the restaurant. Martin was disappointed, realizing he didn’t know anybody from Seattle’s team. After dinner, Jack and Viv were talking with Houston’s white-collar director supervisor and the three younger agents decided that was a good time to sneak out and take a chance on the city.
Martin was the guide. It was 7:30 PM and the all the lights of the city were on. That was indescribable. Even Martin couldn’t hold his enthusiasm. Hundreds of people walked on the streets, appreciating the unique architecture and the lightening. They passed in front of “Monte Carlo”, “Bali’s”, and stopped next to Paris, Las Vegas.
Samantha was amazed with the sight of Eiffel Tower and Arch of Triumph doubles.
“Wow, I feel like I’m in Paris!” she said, excited!
The men laughed. They went to the casino and Sam, knowing about the elevator to the tower’s top, decided to go up, dragging her friends. Danny, however, declined. “I’m afraid of heights,” he said.
But, true was, he wanted stay at the casino and try his luck. Not with the cards, but with that beautiful brunette next to the blackjack table, who was smiling at him.
Sam and Martin went up to the observation deck. They went breathless! The view was the most beautiful sight Sam laid her eyes on. And Martin saw the lights of the city, but they were just a frame for Samantha. She was the most beautiful sight he ever laid his eyes on.
Fifteen more people were on the deck, mostly couples, admiring the view between kisses. Suddenly, they heard a song and looked at that direction. Right across the street, the Fountains of the Bellagio started to dance. For 10 minutes, the combination between music, lights and the waters´ movements left everybody in ecstasy, not only on the deck, but also people on the sidewalks, or crossing the bridges over the streets.
When the show ended, Martin and Samantha went back to the casino. They looked for Danny, but he was nowhere in sight. They decided go back to the hotel.
“Danny’s a big boy. He’ll know how to get back to the hotel,” Martin said.
“You’re right, I just hope he doesn’t get in trouble”, Sam replied.
They were tired, because the time zone difference, and walked back to the hotel. Yet, when they were passing in front of Bali’s, Sam cheered herself up seeing the announcement from “Tequila Bar.”
“Martin, let’s celebrate! One round on me!” she took his hand and dragged him towards the passage.
“Sam, calm down. What are we celebrating?”
“We are in Vegas! Isn’t it exciting? This is a reason to celebrate!”
“Sam, it’s better if we back to the hotel and get some rest, tomorrow morning we have the lectures.”
“Come on, Martin boy! I’m asking you for a drink, you won’t turn me down, will you?”
“Okay, but just one drink. You know I don’t like to drink too much.”
“Okay, one drink”, she agreed, and they entered the busy bar room.
They got a table and called the waiter to take their order. The waiter said the bar was offering free tequila for the next hour. Sam got thrilled.
“Free tequila? For the next hour? I love Vegas! Bring us 3 rounds,” she ordered.
“Sam, take it easy”, Martin warned. “You said just one drink”.
“Martin, I love tequila. I won’t pass the opportunity. You heard the waiter. Free tequila! But don’t worry, I won’t order anything else. If I drink more the 3 shots I’ll get drunk, and the hangover is awful. Believe me, I’ve been there!”
“Okay then. I’ll keep you company, but I want a beer,” and turn to the waiter, who was bringing Sam’s order.
“No way, you’re having tequila with me. Come on Martin, please, relax and have fun!” Sam whispered next to Martin’s ears.
“All right, but if I’ll have a hangover tomorrow, it’s your fault!” and he smile at her.
