--------------------------

The afternoon was incredibly hot and sultry in Washington, D.C., which was suffering a late heat wave. It was unbearable. That Friday night, a huge party will be offer for high society, on the beautiful gardens of FBI Deputy Director Victor Fitzgerald’s house, to celebrate her wife Martha’s 55th birthday. His son, Martin, didn’t like those functions, but it was his mother birthday and he couldn’t be absent. He wished the celebration was more intimate, but, at the same time, he was glad for have other people around so he didn’t need spend much time talking with is father. Even so, he was sad for Sam didn’t come along.
---------
The night was pleasant. There was a full moon and lots of bright stars in the sky. But the gardens also sparkled with the reflection of lights and lady’s gown.

Martin was talking with his dad and some FBI colleagues when he saw his mom waving for him to come closer. He excused himself and walked towards her. She was stunning in a long black gown. With her mother were three ladies.

“Martin, honey,” Martha said, “I want you to meet Mandy and Lily. And, of course, you remember Cindy, don’t you?”

They exchange greetings, shaking their hands, smiling.

“Nice to meet you”, he said to the first ones. “How you’ve been, Cindy?” he asked the third one.

“Well, Martin, it’s been a long time, isn’t it? You are so handsome and elegant”, Cindy told him.

Then, two young ladies, tall and very well dressed, came closer. Martha’s voice was heard again.

“Martin, I want you to meet Trisha and Suzy. Trish is Mandy’s daughter and Suzy, Lily’s”.

Once again, Martin shaking their hands and the girls smile back to him.

“Hi, Martin”, he heard a voice behind him. He turned and saw Kimberly. He saluted her warmly, hugging her. The other ladies looked envious.

However, he didn’t have the chance to talk to Kim; soon his mother was dragging him over the garden, introducing him to all her friends and, of course, to all their daughters.

After dinner Martha danced with her husband and her son. Then, the dance floor filled. Sure thing, Martin had to dance with many girls, but two hours later, he step out unnoticed and went to his room. He had played the part of the dedicated son, so, he called the day off. He could still hear the music playing when he fell asleep.
-------
On Saturday, Martin thought he would spend a calm and peaceful day, alone, and put the good use of the hot weather and the sun and go swim.

He woke up at 10 AM and called Sam. They talked about the party, and his sore feet from all the dancing and having been stepped on by the girls’ high heels. Sam laughed, and heard his plans for the day. For another 30 minutes, they talked and told each other “I miss you.” After they hung up, Martin took a shower and went downstairs for breakfast.

His dad was out, taking care of some business, and mom was on the greenhouse with her plants and flowers. Finishing breakfast, he went upstairs and looked on the drawers for his trunks. He changed and with a towel and a magazine in his hands, went to the garden, lay down in one of the deck chairs by the huge pool.
Half hour later, he heard Martha saying “Martin, honey, be careful with the sun. I invited some friends to lunch, would you like to join us?”

“Thanks Mom,” he replied, “I’d rather stay here. I don’t want to disturb your conversation”.

“Oh, dear, don’t worry. But, if you want this way, so be it”, she answer, walking back to the house.

For another hour, Martin was lying on the chair, reading the magazine. The sun was as hot as hell, so he went to take a dive. He crossed the pool three times and went to take a breath when he heard Martha calling.

“Martin, dear, please, come to say hello to our guests”.

With a sigh, he jump out the pool, hearding the female voices became closer.

Since he was wearing just simple black trunks, he went to the desk chair and, as he grabbed the towel, he heard Martha sound surprised, “Look, honey, what a wonderful surprise, look who’s joining us on this beautiful afternoon.”

He turned around and saw Lily, Mandy and Cindy. But they weren’t alone. Their daughters were there too, waving for him. He wrapped the towel around his waist, took a deep breath and walked towards the women.

“Ladies, forgive my suit, or lack there of”, he said, laughing. “I was swimming. How are you today?” He was very polite with all the women.

“Oh, don’t be silly, Martin, don’t worry about it”, his mom said. “But, you know what’s great, the girls brought baiting suits, I bet they’ll love join you in the pool. Why don’t you show then the changing room, so they can change their clothes? In the meantime, me and my friends will go to living room, so we can talk”, Martha spoke, and her friends agreed. “When lunch is ready, I’ll let you know. Till then, I’ll ask Maria to bring you some snacks and drinks”.

Martin realized his mother’s master plan. He should have known she would make something up. The day was too peaceful, too perfect. Now, his peace and tranquility was over.

As the old ladies walk towards inside the house, Martin indicated the dressing room to the girls, and they went that way.

Martin sat at the deck chair, thinking how naïve he was to think he was safe from his mother tricks. She had behaved herself at the party last night, not even complaining when he disappeared in the middle of the night. Now, he understood her motives. She left her knock-out for the day after, knowing Martin would lower his guard.

He sighed, knowing there was nothing he could do. He threw the towel by the chair and lay down, the sun warming his exposed body. At least, he’d get a chance to talk to Kim.

He remembered the summers they spent together when they were kids in D.C. They went to school together, and she helped him overcome his grandfather’s death. Even not being to close, at age of twelve he was big enough to understand and feel the loss of someone in the family. When Kim’s family moved to Chicago, they were sixteen. After that, they met three or four times, but it was a long time ago.

The girls came back, all three wearing bikinis and scarves around their waists. Martin watched the girls. They should be twenty-four or -five years old, at most. Trish had long and blond hair, green eyes, pale skin. Suzy was a little shorter, with brown eyes and hair by the shoulders. And Kim... Well, she certainly didn’t look any older than those two girls. With long black hair and blue eyes, she has this beauty of her own. Martin was glad that the sassy and confident girl had become this beautiful woman.

Suzy and Trish sat on deck chairs around Martin. Kim took a chair by the corner of the pool, under the shadow, but she was watching the trio with curiosity.
Trish and Suzy start talking with Martin, asking him about NYC, about the 5th Avenue stores, the Broadway plays, TV shows, and he kept looking both sides, trying stick around with the girls’ questions. Kim was watching them, having fun with the situation. She knew Martin was too polite to ignore the girls.

She decided to help him, get up and walked towards the trio. At their side, she said “Calm down, girls, we have all afternoon to talk with Martin, so, relax. Look, Maria is bringing us some drinks and snacks”, she saw Martin give her this thankful look.

Trish and Suzy got up and went to the table where the maid put the stuff, leaving Martin alone for a moment, and he said to Kim.

“Thank you so much”.

“Martin, don’t thank me yet”, she laughed, “as I said, we’ll have *all* afternoon ahead”

“Oh God…” Martin grimaced.

The hours passed slowly. At least, for Martin they did. But he was relieved when the ladies gave him a break, and went to get some tan. At that time, he and Kim talked. About their lives, their jobs and their love lives.

Kim told him she got married, but divorced 2 years ago, and she was living in L.A. and she was in D.C. on vacation, to visit her mom. When Kim asked Martin about his love life, he tried changing the subject, but she insisted, and he told her about Sam.

Kim was happy for him. Martin deserved someone who really liked him, and not because of his family, but because of himself. Martin asked Kim to not say anything, he didn’t want his parents know about Sam. At least, not for now.

“Your secret is safe with me”, Kim asseverated him, smiling.

They talked for a few more minutes, before got interrupted by Trish and Suzy, who were inviting Martin to the pool. Resigned, he politely accepted, since he didn’t want to arouse suspicion and he saw his father, who has arrived, walking towards them. Martin dove at the pool, where the ladies were.

The water was cold, a great relief on that hot afternoon. Victor came closer to the pool, greeting the girls and his son. Then, he turned to Kimberly, greeting her.

“Hello, Kimberly, it’s good to see you”

“Hello, Victor. The party was amazing, congratulations.”

“Well, you know the credit belongs to Martha, but you are right, the party was amazing indeed”.

The two talked for a couple of minutes and they heard Martin’s cell phone, which was by the deck chair, ring. Victor turn to tell Martin, but he was under the water, crossing the pool. Victor though this could be important and pick up the phone. The ID caller showed a NYC number.

“Fitzgerald”, he answered.
----------
Kim’s eyes were closed; she was charming with the warm and the sun, laying on the deck chair.

Victor went answer Martin’s cell. A few moments later, she heard Victor say, very irritated, “Young lady, you’re talking with the wrong Fitzgerald. This is Victor Fitzgerald. Martin is unavailable right now, but I’ll tell him to call you back ASAP. Have a good day”, and hung up the phone.

Kim watched him, curious. He was furious, but, at the same this, he looked stupefied. He noticed Kim’s glance, but gave no explanation, just said, “Ask Martin to call his friend ASAP. A lady friend, apparently a very close lady friend.”

She nodded.

“Excuse me, Kim, I have to go inside. I’ll see you later.” And he walked back to the house, in a hurry.

Kimberly was scared. Who called? Lady friend? Could it be Martin’s girlfriend, that mysterious woman no one knew? What she had said to turn Victor that way?

“Martin”, she call, and still panting because the crawl strokes, he stepped out the pool and walk to her.

“What is, Kim?”

“I think something just happened. Your mobile ringed and your dad answered, he though it was important. He just listened the person talk and said something about be the wrong Fitzgerald, and that you’ll call back. He said it was your lady friend. I guess it was Sam. I think you had better call her, Martin. I don’t know what happened, but Victor was … dazed,” she explained.

He didn’t like the fact Victor answered his phone. His dad should have called him. Could it be a private phone call? With that thought, he panicked.

“Oh, no. I hope it wasn’t one of *those* phone calls” he said out loud.

“What phone calls?” Kim wanted to know. She noticed Martin’s hesitation. “Don’t bother, go and call her, I hope everything’s okay”.

Martin walk away quickly, pressing the speed dial button with Sam’s number. She answered immediately.

“Martin?” she asked, crying.

“Sam, what happened, is everything okay?” he asked worried.

“Oh Martin, it was horrible. I called you, I miss you, you know…,” she seemed start to smile, but then she cry harder. “Why you didn’t answer your phone?” He didn’t know if she was angry or desperate.

“Calm down, Sam. I was on the pool, my dad though it could be something from the office”, he was trying to calm her down. “Sam, please, calm down, it’s not your fault. How could you know?”

“Oh, Martin, I though it was you on the phone, and I started speak…“ She went silent and he heard her sobbing.

“Sam, what is it you said?” Martin asked, but he already knew the answer…

“I said I miss you, and I wish you were here with me, what we could do together, that sort of things, you know ... Oh, Martin, what your dad will think of me?”

“Sam, honey, calm down. I’ll take care of my father; I’ll talk to him later. What I want now is that you calm down, it’s gonna be all right”.

“Martin, what’s he going to think about me? I said those things, I though it was you …”

“Well, he’s going to think I’m a lucky man”, he laughed.

“Martin, that is not funny”

“But it’s true, Sam. I’m a very lucky guy for having you. I miss you too, baby. I wish you were here with me. I want you to meet Kim”, he said, serious.

“I’ll never be allowed to step in your parent’s house, Martin, your dad won’t have a … wait, who’s Kim?”

“I told you about her, remember, my only friend when we were kids. She’s happy for us, Sam”.

“You told her about us?” Sam was afraid, not knowing if this was a good or a bad thing …

“Sam, she’s my friend. After all, I want to tell someone about us. We’ve talked about this, I want everybody know we are together and happy. Although as exciting our secret romance is, I want to show you to everybody, I want to hold you and kiss you on public, for anyone see”.

“Martin, I know, I want that too. When you came back we’ll talked about it, ok? And I also want to talk about your plans for the next weekend”, she said mischievously.

“Well”, he was smiling, “next weekend I plan take this woman I know, she’s gorgeous, smart, she has this wonderful smile and this stunning body, she’s so hot, you know?” his tone was serious.

“Oh, really?” she laughed.

“Yeah, I’ll take her to this place where we’ll be alone and no one will disturb us”

“Oh, I get it. And what you two are going to do on that place where no one will disturb you?” Sam asked, more relaxed now. She loved those talks with Martin; it was like a prelude for their encounters, foreplay.

“Well, I plan take all of her clothes, kiss her full body, and then throw her on the bed and…”

“Martin”, he heard his dad calling.

“Damn it”, he mumbled, hearing Sam doing the same. “Sorry, Sam, I have to go”.

“It’s okay, honey. Call me when you can. I want to hear the rest of your plan, seems very interesting. I’ll be jealous of this lucky girl”, she mock.

“Well, if you're a good girl, you may get a prize later”

“Oh, I’ll behave, believe me! Martin, please, come back soon. I miss you. I love you”.

“Love you too, Sam. Bye.” And he hung up. Victor was almost next to him.

“Hi dad”, Martin said.

“Hello, son. Sorry for interrupt”, Victor spoke. “Were you talking with your lady friend?”

“Hum, dad, I wanted to apologize…” Martin spoke, but was interrupt by his father.

“It was an interesting phone call, Martin”, Victor smile, “But I am the one who owes an apology, I shouldn’t have answered your mobile, I didn’t know it was a private subject. I didn’t want to embarrass nor you neither your friend. I just react that way because I didn’t expect that, but, as I said before, it was very interesting”, he still smile.

Martin didn’t believe what he heard. His father was apologizing? And found it interesting listening? He has to be kidding, Martin said to himself.

“I’m serious, son”, Victor seems to read Martin’s mind. “It was all my fault, and I want you to ask your friend to forgive me”.

“Sam, her name is Sam”, it was all he could say …

“Sam? Samantha? Agent Spade?”

Martin just nodded to his father’s questions, unable to speak.

“She is …” Victor start to speak.

“Dad, please, don’t bother giving me a lecture. I’m a grown man and I don’t need to listen you and mom telling me what I can and cannot do, I’m sick of it,“ Martin blurted.

“I was going to say she’s very beautiful”, Victor smiled. “I won’t give you a lecture, Martin, don’t worry. Yes, you’re right; we don’t have the right of ruling our life anymore. I know our relationship isn’t the best, but believe me, son, your mother and I just want you to be happy. We may not know how to express it for you, but it’s what we want”.

Martin didn’t believe what he was hearing. “You’re not mad or angry, nothing like that?” he asked perplexed.

“Come on, Martin, it’s not for me to judge yours actions. You work at that office for over three years and you certainly know Agent Spade well, and know about her past with …”

“Yes, I know all that”, Martin interrupted his father, “but this is in the past. It doesn’t matter anymore. We are together for almost 8 months, dad, and we are happy. That what matters. You and mom should be happy for me, I found this amazing woman, I care about her and she cares about me”.

“Son, believe me, I’m very happy for you. I don’t know Agent Spade very well, but I know you wouldn’t fall for any woman, unless she was special.” Victor spoke seriously, continuing to see his son’s expression, “Yes, Martin, you are in love, I can feel and see that. I know what it’s like; I’m still in love with your mother, even after all these years. We are not young anymore, but this doesn’t mean our feelings changed. Martin, if she’s the one, I’ll do whatever within my reach for the two of you.”

Martin was deeply touched by his father’s words. Somehow he knew he was sincere.

“I’m glad to hear that, Dad. I wish mom felt the same way. Or, at least, didn’t throw every single girl in town at me,” he retorted playfully, looking towards the pool.

“I’ll talk to her about it. Certainly she’ll be thrilled knowing you’re dating. She wants you settle down with a nice woman, and have kids. Most of her friends are grandmothers and you know Martha doesn’t like to be in disadvantage”, Victor reply.

“Thank you, dad”, Martin was deeply grateful.

“And next time you come to visit us, and I hope that would be soon, you’ll bring Samantha so we’ll have a chance to know her, deal?”

Martin laugh, “After what happened today, Sam will never want walk through the gate, she’s so ashamed. Dad, please, I don’t want you to think she’s…”

“Martin, don’t worry about it”, Victor cut him, sympathetic. “I know the feeling to be far from someone you care about. You know, your mother and I used to have those conversations when I was away”, and burst with laughter seeing Martin’s astonishment face.

“I never would have dreamed of it”, Martin said, laughing.

“Of course, your mother wasn’t as... straightforward as Samantha. I repeat, it was a very interesting call”, he was amused by his son’s blush. “Okay, now that we’ve cleared this, it’s time to go back to our young guests. I don’t want to detain you from the company of those pretty ladies, right?” he winked at his son.

“Yeah, sure”, Martin made a face. “Dad, I want to thank you for this conversation. And for your support.”

“Son, the only thing important to me is you to be happy. You deserve it”.

They hugged, for the first time in a long time. Then, they turned and walked towards the pool.
