Read Sarah Monette's
Mélusine. And sweet fucking gods was it gorgeous. I was totally hooked by page two. It's great to find fantasy novels that don't waste hundreds of pages or a few books until they finally start with the plot. Felix and Mildmay are both such wonderful characters and the writing and the plot just perfect. (Of course I could and can find "mistakes" and "lacks" in the book, but believe me, I could find something to criticize in an angel.) Also I must applaud the author for the realistic touches she added. I'm so sick and tired of seeing characters with extensive scarring who just don't behave the way scarred people might/usually do. Yeah, scars can limit movement. Badly. I can vouch for that from personal experience. If someone takes a bull whip to your back often and badly enough, you might end up not being able to move your arms. Yeah, really. Scars can also make you feel very self-conscious. Also the way Felix's broken mind and hurt is shown is something rather exceptional. Especially considering the genre. To be honest, both of the main characters are broken, abused, mentally and physically scarred people, not some superheroes or other boring stereotypes. And no, I don't think the term antihero would do either of them much justice. Also I have rarely felt such strong feelings towards a literary character as I do towards Malkar. I want to rip him into little bits and pieces. Slowly. Now give me
The Virtu, please.
Oh, what got me hooked? This:
Now, the thing about the binding-by-forms, the way my friend Zephyr explained it to me, is that it lets the hocus make you do what they want. Except to kill yourself. They can't make you do that. But what Porphyria Levant tells Silas Altamont to do is fuck her. I've heard it different ways. Some people say Silas Altamont was beautiful as daylight, and Porphyria Levant had been hot for him for indictions. Some say Porphyria Levant didn't know he was molly, thought he was janus and wouldn't mind. And some say-and I got to admit, this is what I think-that she knew he was molly and that was why she did it. There are other stories about Porphyria Levant, and it's the kind of thing she would do.
Anyway, there's Silas Altamont. He's molly, and he's still in love with Creon Malvinius, but he has to do what the obligation d'âme says, and it says, You got to fuck Porphyria Levant and make her happy. And after a while he goes to her and says, "I can't stand this no more, please, let me stop or I'm going to go out and slit my wrists."
And Porphyria Levant says, "Silas," and smiles her little smile, "I forbid you to kill yourself."
*grins* Yeah, I'm easy like that.
6 Billion Others is a really interesting site about people from around the world telling what they think about love, nature, fears and other really interesting topics. The one on God was great. And the man in Love telling how he and his wife have been married for 24 years and just two years ago they finally fell in love, well, it kinda broke my heart.
