“I only want to be left alone.” Jared whispers to the shadowy figure now standing in his doorway. He didn’t like to be laughed at. He didn’t even like for someone to laugh around him. It made him feel like the heart of the joke. Growing up, that’s what he was, to everyone he ever met, a joke. The freak, the person to avoid unless you planned on being cruel. He didn’t want Jensen to laugh at him, that just made his chest burn, and tears swell in his eyes. “Please…”
“Jared,” Jensen replies, walking in and shutting the door behind him. He knew he needed to be careful. Hell, until he became more aware of what made Jared tick, he knew he would be walking a fine line drunk. “I followed Mike back for a reason.”
Jensen watches as the boy looks up from staring at the floor, “The dreams?”
“If you want to call them that.” Jensen says, walking over and kneeling beside the boy, “The truth is, people are out to get you.”
“Who?” Jared quivers. He has always kept a low profile. He didn’t even have a license because he didn’t want to have to deal with police if he ever got pulled over for something as simple as a broken taillight.
“The Russians.” Jensen replies, settling his hand on Jared’s knee. “I was sent to protect you.”
“What does Russia want with me?” he asks, staring at the older man in confusion.
“Your power.”
“My power?” Jared responds with a nervous laugh, “I have dreams, nothing more.”
“There’s a lot more than you know.” Jensen whispers.
Jared barely heard the low off-handed comment, but before he could ask Jensen to repeat it, Mike burst through the now unlocked door. “Seriously guys, come on, the pizza’s getting cold.”
Jared glares at his friend, as he stands from the bed, and walks out of the room, leaving Mike and Jensen staring at him as he disappears around the corner.
“Did you tell him?” Mike asks when he’s sure Jared can’t hear him.
“Not the truth.” Jensen replies to the bald man. He was actually wondering how long he could keep the truth from the taller man.
“You’ll have to tell him eventually.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Jensen sighed before leaving the room in search of Jared.
As Jensen steps into the living room, intent with talking to Jared, a light vibration against his leg makes him cuss his phone silently for ringing at this moment in time. Taking it out of his pocket to look at the display, he sees that it’s Chris, and decides to step out on the fire escape so no on can overhear. Raising the window, Jensen steps through. He pulls the window back down; making sure it’s completely closed before he even thinks about answering his phone.
“What do you want Chris?” Jensen says as he flips open his phone.
“Have you found the kid yet?”
“Still looking. Seriously man, do you know how many people are in Miami?” Jensen replies, making sure to let a whine slip into his voice to ensure Chris thinks he’s telling the truth.
“Jen, you better find him, and soon. We don’t even know what they want with him.”
“I’ll keep looking, man. I’ll call you when I find out anything.” Jensen flips the phone shut before Chris can respond. Quickly tucking the phone back into his pocket, he slips back through the window.
Jensen smiles when he sees Jared setting on the couch and eating a slice of pizza. “You lied to him.” Jared emotionlessly says, sitting the slice of pizza down and looking at Jensen.
“What?” Jensen questions as he turns back around and looks at the window. He had shut the window when he went out, there was no way Jared could have heard him. “How would you know what I said on the phone?”
“I don’t, but I do.” Jared replies, “I can just see it.”
“Okay…” Jensen remarks. Stepping forward, happy that apparently Jared didn’t know he lied earlier, he sits beside him, “What else can you see?”
“Nothing much, I just knew you lied to someone.”
“How often have you been able to do that?” Jensen slowly asks, trying to find a better way to ask, and failing.
“This was the first time.” Jared replies, “So you did lie, I’m not going crazy?”
“No, you’re not going crazy, Jared.” Jensen tells him, “But can you tell me how you saw it?”
Jared stares at him for long a moment. Jensen can only assume it’s because he doesn’t have the exact words to tell him what he wants to tell him. “It’s just like a glow. I was sitting here, not thinking about anything, and when I looked up, I just saw a light or something and just knew that you lied. I know that doesn’t explain it. Believe me, it doesn’t come close to describing it, but it’s the best I can do.”
Jensen contemplates more questions to ask Jared, hoping to find a way to allow Jared to tell him better, just as he opens his mouth to form a question, Mike walks in, “So what’re y’all talking about?”
Jensen turns and looks at the man, “Apparently Jared can do other things than see the future. He just looked at me and knew I lied.” Jensen quickly continues when Mike looks frightened, “He knew I lied to Chris when I was on the phone with him a few minutes ago.”
“So you can only tell if someone is lying, sometimes?” Mike asks, looking at Jared.
“I’m not even sure I can tell sometimes. This is the first time it’s ever happened to me.” Jared replies looking up at his friend solemnly.
“So you don’t even know if you can do it again?”
“Why, Mike?” Jared questions, looking at his friend, his lips turning up in a slight grin to reveal dimples that Jensen didn’t know about. “Have you been lying to me?”
“We all have our secrets, Jay.” He replies, but quickly continues when Jared’s face shows hurt and confusion, “Jay, I’ve been you’re friend for over two years. You know I wouldn’t do anything to harm you. It’s just that everyone has secrets and everyone lies.”
“I don’t lie.” Jared responds. “I’m going back to my room, please don’t follow me, just let me be. I need time to think.” He says as he gets up and makes his way once more to his bedroom.
“So,” Mike says once the silence gets to be too much, “Jared can see if people are lying?”
“Looks like it.” Jensen answers, “Which means both of us are going to have to be more careful.”
“The boy just keeps making everything harder.” Mike off-handily says after taking a gulp from the beer he opened earlier. Jensen just nods his head in agreement before taking out another beer and opening it.
