Kibum cleared his throat for the 12th time in this hour. Not much because of any colds that he could have, it was April after all... The constant throat clearing was just one of the many tics Kibum's body created today for he didn't know what to do with himself. He kept touching his hair, licking and biting his lips as well as looking everywhere... Everywhere but Kevin's eyes.
They were walking back to Kevin's house together after an evening spent together at the movies, like the many other evenings they would spend with one another every once in a while when a movie sparked interest to them because of the title, the people who acted in it or the synopsis... Kibum usually did not really go to watch a sappy romance with Kevin to actually pay attention to whatever hopelessly tacky and overdone storyline that was on the screen... He had other reasons to pretend to like them.
Kibum went to the movies with Kevin to see the other worry about how impossible the love between the two protagonists seemed. He went to let Kevin have the last of his soft drink after figuring out that he wanted it from the unspoken messages in Kevin's behavior. He went to hold the other's delicate hand in the end when he would cry at the main characters' happy or sad ending. He went to see those movies to tease Kevin about how sappy and starry-eyed he could get over those, even if the younger would just keep talking about what he saw without really hearing Kibum's comments that were always synonyms to I know it happened, stupid. I was watching right next you!
Though, this time. Kibum wondered why he even went.
Usually, Kevin would talk about a million things at the same time and would interrupt everything with something new and a few random bursts of unjustified laughter would be plugged whenever there was supposed to be a point or conclusion to the stories he told. The stories in themselves were nothing grand, really. It could go from how he ran out of dental floss in the morning to how hard it was to sleep with their tight schedule. The blonde would also whine that Kibum would not listen to his stories because of how indifferent Kibum would look upon hearing them, those childish antics would make Kibum laugh and summarize everything Kevin said and would playfully conclude with So the moral of the story is... You really talk way too much, Kevin.
Though, this time was not the same.
Silence had heavily settled itself. It was an awkward sort of silence that had never been here before... On nights like this one, the younger male's hand would usually shyly reach for Kibum's when they got to the street he lived on... But this time he was not doing it and Kibum figured it was because the solid silence between them was blocking Kevin's hand. Again and again, he tried to break this quietness by asking Kevin what was his favorite part of the movie, what he thought about the actors or soundtrack and even which character from the movie reminded him of people he knew. The answers were short, direct, without all the usual bubbly and random rambling that would follow them. Kevin even commented about how it was not in Kibum's usual behavior to be the one asking those things.
It felt distant, a bit like Kevin was talking from afar or over the phone. Kibum was not able to read him as easily as he once did... He decided that maybe he was trying too hard so he shut his mouth and walked with the other, glancing behind them a few times. Behind them were their shadows that kept disappearing in the dark and reappearing so close to each other with every streetlight. It reminded him of how they had their hardships but always seemed to get out of them stronger, closer... Though, it did not feel like they were as close as their shadows were. He frowned and looked forward instead.
This was when Kevin looked at Kibum, took his hand and slipped it into his hoodie's pocket. It had been too calculated for the older male's tastes, it usually just happened naturally but this time it felt like Kevin thought about it a lot and even hesitated before doing it. Kibum squeezed at the other's hand slightly but no, he could not find that warmth from before.
They reached the Woo house and Kevin said he had fun and that they should probably do that again some other time. Kibum's smile was bitter, he did not want to have any replays of how awkward this evening was but despite this he still said that he would look forward to it and go. He hated lying to Kevin but that was the only way to keep everything alright or at least make them seem so.
Kevin let go of Kibum's hand and hugged him. Kibum held him close, feeling their hearts beating to different tempos and smelling the subtle fragrance of Kevin's body lotion but yet again, the usual warmth he would feel from the other was not here... This was usually the moment when Kevin would lean down slightly to kiss him and tell him that he loves him and that he will miss him... but like everything else tonight, this was not one of their usual cliche scenes.
Kevin's phone rang and he immediately let go of Kibum to answer.
"Hey! ...Oh no, I'm not busy. I'm just with Kibum... Right now? Really? I thought we couldn't see each other tonight and I missed you... Really? You're done early? That's great but I'd need a ride, it's too late for buses... Okay, I'll get a cab. Okay. I love you.... No way, I love you more! Alrighty then! See you, bye."
Kibum did not need to even ask who he was speaking English to and giggling to. He only looked up at the other when Kevin asked what the number of the taxi company they relied on often was. Smiling and trying to not look as bothered as he was, the older just suggested bringing him there since his Audi was parked right in front of Kevin's house anyways and he was going in this direction anyways. The last part was another lie but it made Kevin beam brightly and head to the car.
"I have to go t--"
"I know."
There was some sad Japanese song on the radio to which Kevin swayed in his seat while Kibum -who could understand the lyrics unlike the other- felt like faith had fun ripping him inside a little more with songs that said things like Darling darling, I've seen you from so many different angles. Even if the day we can no longer be together comes our way I don't think it matters because I can't help loving you.
They spoke no words during the whole ride and Kibum only drove and glanced a few times at the blond boy, who was texting and smiling at those messages he kept getting. Kevin's smile had always been one of Kibum's favorite things to see followed by the sight of his pink cheeks after a kiss or the sight of his eyes widening in awe when he spotted the few stars in the Seoul City sky.
Soon enough, Kibum pulled over in front of the familiar apartment building. This time, he was unable to completely hide how this made him feel. It was like handing Kevin over and surrendering, like giving up without a choice, like losing this beautiful person he once called his.
Looking at the driver's face, Kevin suddenly looked like he felt bad too.
"... Kibum, you know... you didn't have to bring me." He said, "I know you didn't want to come here..."
"What? Don't be dumb." Kibum said, trying too hard to smile again, "I'm faster than any cab around here and besides, you two want to spend time together no? The earlier you come, the longer you stay."
Kevin slouched a little in his seat, "But I'm leaving you alone. That's barely fair. Let's go do something else tonight instead."
No matter how much Kibum wanted to just start the car again and drive far away to a place where he would be able to keep Kevin all to himself, he knew that was a selfish way of thinking.
"Don't make him wait so long." He said, feeling defeated again.
"But... what about y--?"
"Listen, you have someone new now. I know you guys are dating and happy and all that crap, I got used to the idea." He cut Kevin's worried question firmly, gripping at the wheel.
"K-Kibum... I'm.. I'm sorry." Kevin looked down guiltily at his lap. "It's just that you never say what you think about us... I thought you really hated us both."
"Shut up. If anything, I really like seeing you happy with him. I'm happy you guys are together, really..." Kibum looked at him with a soft look in his eyes. "You deserve to be happy so be it."
"I can tell you're not happy." Kevin frowned, "Don't you think you deserve to be happy with someone, too?"
Kibum did not answer directly for fear of the effect admitting Kevin was right would have, "Don't mind me. I'm a loner, I'll be fine on my own."
He lied again but Kevin seemed to buy it and looked vaguely satisfied by it so he stepped out of the car and waved at Kibum.
"Say hi to your family for me!"
"Will do." Kibum started the car once the other closed the door behind him, "Say hi to your boyfriend for me."
"Sure thing!" Kevin said before skipping his way to the door of his destination and then he waved, "Bye!"
"Bye!"
Kibum waved and immediately drove away when Kevin entered the building... but that was only to pull over again in a barely lit street and lean his arms against his wheel and put his forehead over them, looking down at his lap. He glanced next to him at the now empty passenger seat and mouthed all those words he had wanted to tell Kevin but held inside. There were many but there were a few that kept on coming back to his mind and stuck to his heart.
"I need you... Don't go."
Another sad song was playing on the radio... Kibum just wished it did not fit as a soundtrack to what he just went through, he wished this simple bye and those smiles did not feel as final as they did... But mostly, he wished that this was just another one of those movies, that everything would fade to black and that he wasn't the one crying at the sad end.
