Rat's sacrifice
Rat (call_me_rat) traveling with a family with kids and a couple who looked like my parents, wandering and lost on foot, evacuees from some major disaster. Low on supplies, they stumble on an industrial complex in the middle of woods. The people running the place offer living necessities in exchange for work, and have other evacuees working there. There are two job options; working in the large warehouse space, or another area where some employees wear biohazard suits. It’s a very ominous place and the lower ranking workers without suits have a dull, resigned look.
Rat’s group is allowed to rest and he gets separate quarters from the married couple. When he wakes and goes to report to work, he’s told everyone else keeps picking the warehouse and his only option is to work in the other area. He has no safe suit, and neither do a lot of the workers. There’s almost no talking and everyone working in this area is sullen and depressed. When there’s a spill of some kind of chemicals, those without safety suits clean it up watched over by a few people with them. They keep losing people in this department, they just vanish mysteriously and the other workers say nothing about it. Because of this people from the warehouse area are moved into the chemical area to fill the job slots. There’s a definite wrongness to the whole situation.
Rat flees the industrial plant to the woods, and tries to contact the others in the warehouse to warn them but he has to dodge security. Fortunately, when they’re told they have to now work in the chemical area the childless couple from Rat’s group also flees, and find Rat in the woods. By now he is sick, developing fungus-like growths on his left neck and chest. More refugees with supplies are coming through and all three of them get people with an RV to take them in. Rat is showered and attended to, a doctor in the new batch of refugees removes most of the growths, but he is still weak and has black marks on his chest and scars from the removed growths. Now that people with vehicles and supplies have come by, workers have a chance to leave the industrial complex. There’s a security lockdown to prevent this, but Rat convinces some who got away and some newcomers to attack the industrial complex and free whoever they can. They get in but it’s a major fight, with security guards running around, armed. Rat goes into the chemical area and attacks the company men with biohazard suits, shredding them open. It’s not just revenge, he draws security forces to that area and rallies the workers there to create a diversion. He’s already figured that all working there are probably doomed from the contamination. The diversion allows those in the safer warehouse side a much better chance to escape, and Rat and a few other biohazard area workers manage to escape to the waiting vehicles. The entire group prepares to flee the area.
I have a vague idea of the other chemical workers dying or wandering away and Rat being abandoned, and the couple making someone take them back when they realize this, very upset that people would abandon the man who organized the rescue because they’re afraid of his illness. I’m not sure if that was part of the original dream or places my brain wandered to after I was half awake.
