Every now and again, and again, and again, I like to re-visit some of my childhood influences. Here is what I have learned, in chronological order... probably.
When I was a wee thing, that special age where one thinks it is a good idea to stand directly in front of the TV and dance to the songs, I liked to watch "The Chipmunk Adventure" over and over (like, A LOT. I was fan-girlish even then..") and here below is what I used to dance in front of the TV to. I might add, I found NOTHING wrong with any of this. I knew what the song meant, even understood the double-entendre (not that I knew the word for it.... mmm, words are delicious). I not only found nothing WRONG with it, I actually LIKED this song. Perfectly Normal.

I recently watched it again for the first time in LITERALLY DECADES, and was mildly HORRIFIED. I used to think that CHIPMUNK/HUMAN CHILD HYBRID THINGIES SEDUCING DEADLY VIPERS WITH STRONG SEXUAL OVERTONES was PERFECTLY NORMAL.

I still can’t figure out how this scene made it past The All Powerful Childhood Editor, my mother. She LITERALLY edited (out loud this word sounds like a stutter. Ha.) BAMBI. I didn’t know Bambi’s mother DIED until I was, like, TWELVE.

One of my favorite poems EVER is The Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti. It is tragic and beautiful and has goblins and markets and forbidden fruit and Sapphic overtones, oh my! For some reason, I am CONVINCED the soundtrack to the poem is No More I Love You’s by Annie Lennox. I recently watched the video (in the link above) for the FIRST TIME in my ENTIRE LIFE, and WTF???

That is not how it looks in my head, I assure you. No, it looks more like this beautiful illustration by Charles Vess.

Sometimes, I alter song lyrics, or change the titles to be something I like better, because it makes me happy. One such song victim is Heather Alexander, with the song’s ACTUAL title being March of Cambreadth. In my head, it doesn’t look ANYTHING like the video below, but I really like this video ALSO.

I usually call this "The DIE DIE DIE Song" or inexplicably, "The Viking Song". Because I am ME, this reminds me of a book, Ever World by K.A Applegate. In it, a group of modern-day teenagers get dropped into the midst of REAL LIVE VIKINGS and must LITERALLY SING to SAVE THEIR LIVES. The characters stumble, they can’t think of any Viking songs! I mentally SHOUTED at them "SING THE VIKING SONG!!! OMG!! DUH!!" but, tragically, they did not KNOW The Viking Song, so instead, they sang Killing Me Softly. If I were going to write a Guide to Surviving Real Live Vikings, memorizing this song would be STEP ONE.

Just a few more reasons Why I am the Way I am.
