Summary: Pre-series. In the midst of a late-winter hunt, Dean Winchester turned fourteen. No one noticed but Sam.
"It's--"
"Yeah, I know." He leans against the edge of the motel bed, metal frame digging into the backs of his knees.
"Aren't you gonna say something?"
"No." He thinks Sam must be too young to understand that it's okay, the forgetting.
"But--"
"He's got other stuff to worry about." It hurts like a bitch, but it's okay. Because it's his birthday, and his father's on a hunt, and the only gift that he could ever want is safety, for his dad and for Sam.
It doesn't matter to Dean if his father never remembers his birthday again, if he can have that as a promise.
