It was an apologetic joke on Arthur’s part. A week after the birth fiasco within Threshold’s headquarters, the mathematician’s quick tongue had gotten the better of his self-restraint and he had said something to Lucas that crossed the line between teasing and verbal attack. The large red lollipops were his way of saying ‘sorry kid’ because despite his mastery of 200 dialects, apologies always got stuck in his throat.
Before he left the room he glanced at Nigel, who had been uncharacteristically quiet since Lucas had started sucking on a lollipop. The linguist’s eyes widened. Nigel’s fascinated eyes were on Lucas, his forgotten book open on his lap. The doctor’s Adams’ apple bobbed as he swallowed dryly, face flushed.
If Arthur came up with four, he did not mention it.
