Just a random drabble that I wrote on the bus.
Title: Past And Present
Fandom: Brimstone
Word Count: 350
Summary: Zeke wants to know more about his employer.
Past And Present
“It’s a bit late to be reading that drivel, Mr. Stone. You’ve already been damned.”
Zeke looked up from the first page of the Bible for a moment, absorbed the sight of the Devil in a Coles uniform and smiled. “I’m researching,” he answered, flipping through the pages idly.
“Researching?” Lucifer said archly, plucking the book from the detective’s hands. With a contemptuous look on Its face, the Devil tossed it back onto the shelf. “You should be researching the whereabouts of my wayward children, not wasting time. There’s nothing of interest in that book.”
“Your history is.”
The Devil snorted. “My dear detective, that book was written for humans by humans. It’s pure foolishness.”
“It’s right about some things,” Zeke insisted, watching his boss carefully. “You do exist, Hell is your domain, and you love God.”
“Loved.” It corrected toothily.
“Love.” Zeke smirked. “And you Fell- even your relatives refer to you as Fallen.”
“You actually paid attention to what that frivolous creature said? Please, Mr. Stone, tell me you aren’t serious!”
“It’s less likely to lie than you are.” He pointed out.
“So you’d like to think,” a mocking smile, “maybe Fallen refers to the fact that I have had the most contact with mortals. Most angels don’t like leaving heaven, Ezekiel. They’ve gotten lazy.”
“Face it, you’re God’s bitch and no matter what you say or do, you always lose.”
“Nobody beats me!” Lucifer snarled, pushing the man against the bookshelves hard enough that a couple copies of the Bible fell off.
“Then why are you still in Hell?” Zeke grunted, trying to break the Devil’s hold.
Lucifer waited a pointed moment before releasing his employee. “Unlike you Mr. Stone, I’m not limited by being human; I know what’s going on in the world.”
“So you’re not just being used?” He waved the book in the other’s face, watching carefully.
It sneered. “As much as you are alive and free.”
But as Zeke walked away, he thought of how Lucifer had looked in a retail clerk’s uniform as It denied loving God, denied losing anything. The Devil was lying - maybe even to itself.
