018. Poison
Vogler was poison to the hospital. House had told her that as soon as he set eyes on the multimillionaire but she had to accept the man’s condition if she wanted the money. And she needed the money, the hospital needed the money. Nurses, equipment, research; everything depended on money.
‘Health was a business.’
But a hospital was not the same as a drug company and Vogler did not seem to realize it. Sure, House was an sociopath who undercut her authority every chance he got; but he was the best doctor she had. Even if his department was an ‘economic black hole’, it was the only chance some people had to live. He solved puzzles everybody else gave up on; no wonder he did not want to waste his talent on simple things.
She did have power over him, even if he would never admit it. The clinic was her leash, and though she let him be for a while after the incident with his leg, she had no plans to loosen it again.
It was pride that finally forced her to suggest getting rid of that hundred million dollars. Dr. Lisa Cuddy was nobody’s lapdog. She would not roll over or expose her throat for any man. She would not allow another innocent doctor like Wilson to be sacked because of politics. She would not suffer through any more humiliation designed to weaken her power.
She would not sentence innocent people to die.
And though she regained part of her soul; she felt another part tear away from her.
