Falling Towards Light 26-30

26. Teammates

“Kyle, if you do that one more time, I swear I will saw your balls off with a dull spoon and feed them to you.”

“Jeez Lulu, is your husband that bad a lay?” Lillis’ face twitched and Kyle ran to Carolyn’s desk and hid behind her chair. “Hide me!”

“… I’m surrounded by children.” Carolyn sighed. “Just apologize already and leave the hubbah-bubba package in your desk. Lillis’ sex life is none of your business anyway.”

“Sorry Lulu.” Kyle said, standing up behind Carolyn’s chair. He was about to peer over her shoulder to what she was working on when he spotted something on her neck “Is that a hickey?”

“So you do have a boy-toy!” Lillis crowed, her squabble with Kyle forgotten for a moment.

“No I don’t!” Carolyn denied truthfully, blushing.

“Liar!” Her co-workers chorused.

“I’m going to go talk to Lydia about today’s program.” Carolyn stood up quickly and left the office, making sure to smack Kyle’s leg ‘accidentally’.

It was amazing how well they could work together when they were broadcasting though.

27. Parents

I was kissing Carolyn on her bed one morning before work, tasting her and the cherry lip-gloss she had been applying when I found her in her bathrobe, when someone knocked on the door. Figuring it was just Anita being a pest, I ignored our visitor in favor of Carolyn.

Then she flipped us over, almost sending me to the floor I might add, and started to lick the sensitive skin around my nipples. Gasping, I leaned my head back and saw somebody who was definitely NOT Anita peering through the window. The middle-aged woman’s eyes widened as she noticed who was on top of me, and mouthed ‘Carolyn’.

I knew that I should’ve insisted on proper curtains even if Carolyn can’t tell the difference.

The woman seemed to find her voice because she yelled “Carolyn!”

My lover froze, the excited flush on her face draining in seconds. “Aunt Leah?” She whimpered, pulling a blanket over her head. “Oh shit.”

28. Children

For a moment, I thought it was going to be like what happened with my mother: the betrayed look on the face, the incredulity and denial of reality; but when Carolyn’s aunt entered our home, she merely looked numb.

“Aunt Leah, this is Kelly;” Carolyn introduced them, licking her lips nervously. “Kelly, this is my Aunt Leah, the one who raised me after my parents died.”

“Um… Hi.”

“Kelly, why don’t you go make some tea? Aunt Leah likes Green Tea and I’ll have some juice.”

“Okay.”

I lingered in the doorway for a little while -just to make sure our guest wasn’t about to have a heart attack. “Nervous isn’t she?” The woman asked mildly, seeming to break out of her shock.

“A little.” My Carolyn actually laughed. “But she’s fun.”

“How long has this been going on?”

“Since summer.” Carolyn answered vaguely. “I do love her though.”

As affection flooded my thoughts, Aunt Leah seemed to recover from her surprise. “Don’t you miss a man’s… you know?”

“Sometimes, but this way’s just as rewarding. And Kelly, I mean it. Tea!”

‘Busted.’ Anita’s voice rang in my mind.

29. Birth

Not long after Aunt Leah’s surprise visit, Anita showed up one morning with a cat in her arms and a guilty smile on her face.

“No.”

“Please?”

“No.”

“Kelly…” Anita pleaded, her delicate Spanish features emphasizing her large eyes.

“I need coffee.” I muttered, leaving the door open as I went into the kitchen. Instead of following me like I wanted her to, she snuck into Carolyn’s room and made my sleeping housemate wake up early on a weekend. “Anita!” I scolded once I found her fondling my lover. Again.

Instead of being her usual sweet-tempered -if snarky- self, Carolyn kicked Anita out of the room and convinced me to adopt the cat.

The evil-tempered, multi-coloured, bundle of claws and teeth quickly became Carolyn and Anita’s adopted lovechild. It makes a woman feel left out.

30. Death

Change was not something Kelly dealt with well. With the introduction of Sachiko the cat in her life, Anita became even more prominent: her biweekly visits becoming daily, and sometimes she slept over to be closer to ‘her darling Sachiko’. Of course, the brat also took the opportunity to spend time with Carolyn, irritating Kelly to no end. Carolyn, being a natural pacifist, tried to mediate the arguments that broke out, before giving up and bringing a smug Sachiko into her room.

Eventually, the two warring women got the hint and called a truce. Anita loved being the focus of Kelly’s attention, but she could see how Carolyn’s passive anger was tearing at her. Truth was, she was getting tired of it too.

It was time grow up.
